Why do we question students and their ability rather than question assessments and standards that we use to measure them?

When I worked in a bakery for a college job, if clients didn't like the taste of our treats, we didn't question the clients, we changed the way we made bread. Obviously, this analogy shouldn't be taken too far to compare, but I think the principle is interesting: who/what bears the weight if the desired outcome isn't met? It matters who bears that weight, because often we put it on the shoulder of students. I think we should examine if assessments and standards allow for students to showcase neurodiversity, along with their cultural capital.

"Equitable assessment means that students are assessed using methods and procedures most appropriate to them." (Suskie, 2000, p. 1). Suskie goes on to explain that although we have evidence that students have different learning styles and ways of proving their knowledge, most end up taking multiple choice, high-stakes exams (p. 2). Current test strategies operate with the belief that only a select few should succeed, many will be average, and some should fail (Care and Vista, 2017). A pass/fail approach to learning will have negative affects for students in the long run. If students are preparing for college/career ready environments, than focus on skills that are improving in students rather than just scores (Care and Vista). In the current one-size-fits most (I will admit there are different tests and accommodations), students might score fewer points in a anxiety-inducing, high stakes test at the end of the year. The student might have progressed in so many areas that will not show because they didn't circle in the correct bubble on a piece of paper. And, if they don't do well in one-dimensional tests, it influences the decisions that get made for the student.

https://ssir.org/articles/entry/education_is_changingits_time_assessment_caught_up
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.540.9919&rep=rep1&type=pdf
