Mr Norris was one of my most memorable role models and he would always play the Beatles in class which I loved.

My favorite memory from elementary music was my music teacher. She was a super hip teacher and she loved her job. She always made it so exciting by incorporating different activities into music class so we were moving around during the class time and doing different types of things rather than just music. She was always super excited to be there and loved to work with us.
My least favorite part from elementary music was that we were forced to learn to play a instrument and had to perform it in 4th grade. I was never really interested in music and was not very good at it. I always had stage fright at a child as well so it was super nerve racking to have to learn an instrument and then perform in front of a group of people. During this time, I learned to play the violin but I never did that well. But an up side to this story was that the teacher I had always made me feel like I was doing something right and it made me more confident.

MJ

When I was growing up there was very little in the way of music programs in my school district. Most teachers had to take it upon themselves to give us some form of musical education. When I was in third grade I can remember one of my teachers personally buying the whole class recorders so that we could learn to play them for a music performance for our parents—it was a lot of fun. When I entered sixth grade the district brought back a formal music program. I picked the trumpet and played for one year. I always wanted to play the trumpet and having the opportunity was my favorite memory of elementary music. There were only ten of us in the music class and it occurred after school. Eventually they dropped the program at my school due to lack of interest or funding, either way it was very disappointing and thus my most disappointing experience with childhood music.
I think that music and performance are essential parts of the educational curriculum. They teach expression and creativity which are essential to young learners.

RH

Considering that I attended a religious school, they tried to make sure that we were not lacking in any educational aspects even music despite the general lack of support the arts usually receive. These songs (I don't know what they count as) were my favorite musical memories because we all had the same songs despite being from different places. Publicly performing these songs were my least favorite part of the process though.

- FM

I remember being super excited to sign up for the elective! I grew up around music so I was excited to learn an instrument just like my dad. It was a nice experience, even if it was short lived. That was also what caused my least favorite memory from elementary school. The school did not have much funding, so we did not have the chance to continue the program. However, I did enjoy the time I had with the experience of music at my elementary school. ZB

My favorite memory from elementary school was getting to play the violin every week. Each student had the choice of what instrument we wanted to play and I thought that the violin would be a great first instrument. I remember learning how to play "My heart will go on" and "Mary had a little lamb". Going to the music room was something I always looked forward to each week and I remember how much fun I always had with my friends and really loved listening to the song we played. I think my least favorite part was the process of learning how to play the violin. A lot of us including myself were very impatient and wanted to play right away. We spent a lot of time learning the basics before actually playing and because I was so anxious to play something on the violin that the learning process was my least favorite part.
- YO

I enjoyed learning different types of themed musicals or getting excited to perform. Those type of music memories were so fun and memorable in school. With that said, my least favorite memories were Playing the recorder or having to sing with a group of classmates in class. I remember it being awkward to sing in a small setting as opposed to everyone doing one big performance. I liked being able to participate with a group and not be singled out as an individual performing. I felt more comfortable in those type of music settings.

DC

One of my favorite memory if elementary school music took place when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. There were times when I had to switch from one class to another in order to learn other subjects while my main teacher would be teaching students from my class or another. During my time in another class for a certain amount of time, we were in the auditorium dancing to certain music and the dance was instructed by that teacher. She or he taught us their movements while dancing along to "Jingle Bell Rock" by Bobby Helms. I enjoyed the song and the dance. Whenever "Jingle Bell Rock" is playing on radio or anywhere, that reminded me the dance we did to that song. My least favorite memory of elementary school music was when I was in third grade and my class and I had to perform "Chicken Dance Song" in front of our families. My parents recorded that performance. Looking back at the moment now makes me feel embarrassed because I hated the song and dance.

AC

I got to play the violin, flute, and the piano. The violin was my favorite instrument to play out of the others. However, the music class did not last long, we only got to learn and play with the instruments for only two weeks so I didn't really get the full lesson of playing. I was disappointed when we didn't have the music class anymore. I really did wish to continue with the violin.

When I was in elementary school, my school did not have a music program so I do not have much experience with music. This would be my least favorite experience because I never had the opportunity to experience to learn or play music as a child like others have. However, I did have the honor to intern with a first grade class last year who did have a music program. My favorite experience from that was when the music teacher would ask the students what the name for each note was and when the students answered back correctly she would play that note. Excited to hear how the rest of the song was played, the student continued to work together to complete the song. At the end of the lesson, the music teacher complied it up all together for the students to listen to it. It was a very satisifying feeling knowing that they have completed the task and are now able to listen to the song being played all together. I really enjoyed that portion of lesson through out my internship, so I hope this class will help me broaden my knowledge of elementary music!
-AB

I attended a school in Mexico and we had a music class which was one of my favorites. As a kindergarten student all of the songs were fun. My professor would make us sing random songs that would include what we were learning in our regular classes. My favorite song was when we were learning the vowels. We had to go across the classroom and sing the vowel while forming the vowel with our arms. My least favorite memory of elementary music was in six grade when my teacher was teaching us a new song for our show. I remember that she told me not to sing because I wasn't able to sing in alto or soprano. She told me to just move my lips but to not sing. This was my least favorite memory because she made me feel like I was not good at anything.
JS

I was homeschooled from kindergarten through high
school, so I never had "music classes" or even normal classes growing up, haha. My mom plays the piano and gave my brothers, a few friends, and me lessons a few times a week. Then in jr high, I picked up guitar and began taking private lessons with a guy from church. So my memories of elementary music revolve around my house/family and my church. I would say my favorite memory for elementary music was putting on a Christmas piano and vocal recital for a few years in a row. My brothers and church friends all got to play and/or sing in it! I was about 9 years old for one that I sang my first duet with my friend, and I remember being SO nervous but loving the fancy dress I got to wear. I think one of my worst early music memories was having auditions at my church for who would get the solos for our Sunday School Kids Classes, and I didn't get ANY of the 4 available...the worst part is that my mom was the one leading the auditions. My own mother didn't choose me! To be fair, my vocal abilities sucked back then, haha! But those are two big memories for my elementary music life!
-BEC

She would go out of her way and bring her own instruments from home to class. I would say that was my favorite memory of elementary music because it was always fun using different instruments and following a song. Also, at the end of class we would try to create our own music by just making different sounds, it usually ended up a big mess but it was super fun. My least favorite memory was in kindergarten when we did a singing performance. At that time I had no idea what was going on so I felt forced to perform. When it came to performance day I was so lost and ended up just standing there.

PL

Although we did not have a separate music class or program my teachers made it a priority to squeeze in these loud yet exciting lessons.
I never had an official band class in elementary school, but I did have the opportunity to learn the recorder when I was in third grade. I found it very interesting, so much so that I do not actually remember the teacher, but I clearly remember every other detail, including all songs we learned to play. I would say my least favorite memory is that I had the longing to be in an actual band class and play another instrument, but I was not old enough at the time. When I became old enough, I moved schools and the new school did not have a band program. I did not learn another instrument until high school. It was the clarinet, and I loved it!

One day he decided to teach the class the song "Yesterday," by the Beatles. He coordinated the class so that we were all in harmony with each other, singing a beautiful song. "Yesterday," is still one of my favorite songs.
My least favorite elementary music memory was when in 5th grade when I wanted to try out for choir. The choir director made everyone sing a solo in front of the rest of the group. This was very difficult for me, but I did it anyways.

My favorite memory of elementary music class was being a part of the chorus! I was never one to play sports so this was the first time in school where I found a place that I felt as if I belonged. I remember my music teacher being so knowledgeable about composers and musicians, I found it fascinating. My worst music class experience was in fifth grade when I had to change schools and chose band because they didn’t have chorus. I wanted to play the drums but the bane teacher needed more people to play the flute so that’s where I ended up. I always wished I had been able to switch instruments. -AB

My favorite memory of elementary music was doing band in 4th grade. I learned how to play the clarinet, and I thought it was a really fun instrument to learn. My least favorite memory of elementary music was in music class when my teacher had "favorites" in the class because she knew them personally. This made me feel like I wasn't special and the other kids that she liked were special and better than me, even though I payed attention and did my best in the class.

The elementary school that I went to didn't have a music program. Although my favorite memory of elementary music was the talent show. Every year my school would host a talent show and students were allowed to perform whatever they wanted. Singing and dancing were the top things students would do. I did two talent shows.

I don’t remember much about music in elementary. I guess we did some singing as a group and performed in front of our families. I didn’t necessarily like that too much. I also think that I was sick and missed the classes when we learned to play the recorder. I didn’t really get that experience. I remember that 5th grade was when I started to show interest in playing guitar and I eventually started taking classes while in elementary still, I continued a bit into middle school but I quit playing the guitar because it no longer interested me.

-MM

My favorite memory of elementary music was in 5th grade. My class and I got the chance to play three types of instruments the violin, the flute and piano. My favorite instrument to play was the violin, we got to learn the notes and a short song. I really enjoyed the music class; however, it only lasted for 2 week and the class ended. I do wish they continued the class for the whole year I guess my school didn't have the money for it. My least favorite memory of elementary music I am not sure of, I guess I don't really have one. I really enjoyed everything I did that connected to music like performing Christmas songs to all the family and the school, and I even participated in the talent show for fun.
EV

My favorite memory of elementary music was the winter program. It was a giant production that just my combo class put on and it was so exciting to practice and practice and learn the songs and the dances and to even make the costumes. It was such a huge deal the day of and I remember being so nervous but excited because there were so many parents watching and it felt so cool to see them clapping for you while you were on stage, after working so hard to perfect the show. My least favorite memory was having to sing by myself to my teacher so she could decide if we were altos or sopranos. It was so stressful and it made me never want to sing alone ever again!

My favorite memory in regards to music was learning to play the bass a few years ago. I remember being really into the Red Hot Chili Peppers album Californication, hearing the bassline to "Emit Remmus," and deciding to learn. I'd spend hours a day just practicing my finger placement and plucking to the point where my fingertips would get ridges from the strings.
My least favorite memory is taking music in 3rd grade. The teacher wouldn't really make the class interesting at all and for a third grade classroom, he was unnecessarily snobby and would call us dumb; he was eventually either fired or moved or something along the lines.

-DCC

We learned to play the flute, piano, and the drums. It was so much fun. I enjoyed learning how to play and having professionals teach us and listening to them play was great! Then at the end which ever instrument we felt more confident in we would practice and practice. So, at the end of the year we did a performance where all our parents came and it was such a great time.
-A.G

I had so much fun with that and my favorite part was the talent show at the end of the year. I still remembers parts of the drum sequence that we learned for the show. She made it fun to learn how to play piano, with lots of fun acronyms to learn to read music. At every lesson, I always had two pieces to practice: one assigned to me, and the other that I chose that was fun.

My least favorite memory from elementary school music would be doing Christmas performances, or any type of performance in front of an audience. He would come up with silly songs for us to remember and we would ask him to keep repeating the songs because they were so funny. He made a song about how he got stung by a bee and that was everyone's favorite. My least favorite memory of elementary music was when I played the flute and I had a solo. I remember being so anxious about being on stage in front of everyone and I was afraid to mess up. However, it ended up turning into a good memory because I did well.
~JS

My favorite elementary school music memory was probably a little different than others' since I attended a private school. We performed plays and musicals for the church whom the school belonged to which was really awesome because we knew that no matter what, we had a huge audience thanks to the church members who would go watch and support us along our family members too. A not so good memory (but also not too terrible) was that I'd often cut my academic school work hours to rehearse which would leave me with more homework than expected. Another not so good memory is that due to how small our school was, we only performed inside the church sanctuary which didn't give us much space. Overall, I loved being exposed to being in front of an audience, playing musical instruments, and singing since such a young age. It truly changed my life up until this day.
A.N.

However in eighth grade I had a one week lesson on brass instruments. I was absent the day they picked the instruments and got stuck with the oh so exciting Trombone. I was instantly uninterested in carrying back-and-forth walking home the massive machine. To top it all off I didn't really learn anything. My partner was well versed in how to play and I would just mimic his motion and was successful on fooling the teacher for an A. It wasn't until college that I was able to learn the uke and Thoroughly enjoyed learning so I can play for my daughter.
CEE
