We use the past simple [past simple], in the affirmative, to confirm situations that occurred and ended or were repeated in the past. The past simple is created by adding -ed to the end of the verb. When we use the simple past affirmative, we start with the subject followed by the verb in the past tense. For example: - "Yesterday they worked on an important project." = The sentence is affirmative in the past simple, so we add -ed to the end of the verb work (worked). To form a negative phrase in the past simple, you must use this order, subject, no (or its abbreviated form did not) and infinitive without a. For example: you went to Japan last year. (You didn't go to Japan last year).
 "INTERROGATIVE"
Interrogative. To ask questions it is necessary to use the auxiliary did + the subject (I, you, he, she, that, we, them) + the verb in the infinitive + the complement: Did you see the thief's face? (Did you see the thief's face?) Did you visit your grandparents last week? (Did you visit your grandparents last week?)

How to use auxiliary verbs: "questions" in the past simple
In the past simple, the auxiliary to form the questions is did. Did is used regardless of the person, it is there simply to indicate that it is a question and in the past tense.
You went to the cinema? = Did you go to the cinema?
Did you sleep well? = Did you sleep well?

"Negatives" in the past simple with didn’t
The past simple uses the auxiliary didn’t plus the infinitive verb to form negations.
