Following my Live Music Workshop session on the 16/01/2017, I decided that there were certain skills I had to gain in order to make sure that the following session was more successful and the song I was a part of sounded better. Myself, Simran and Lydia were practicing a song off of a given list of music material - Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy. I was the vocalist in the performance, whilst Simran was on the keyboard and Lydia was on the ukulele. We decided on this set-up the week prior to this, so when we next had a workshop session we knew where to start. I am the vocalist as my voice is very soft compared to the others, so we felt it suited the song nicely. The ukulele was chosen as it gives an authentic Island vibe, and was also different to the slow, sad-sounding guitar which was used in Eva Cassidy's version. We wanted our song to be more upbeat, instead of the lullaby-like version Eva Cassidy did. The piano helped add texture to the piece and contrasted well with the ukulele. However, there were multiple aspects of the song that needed to be worked on at home, so we came to the next session more prepared. My personal goal that I set myself was to learn the lyrics so that I didn't have to read off of a sheet. I also had trouble hitting some of the notes, and breathing properly whilst singing, so I was often left without breath and was not holding the notes properly. These are the things that I had been working on at home.

I have worked on my vocals for the song on two occasions since the session. These were on the 18/01/2017 and 19/01/2017. I spent half an hour each time singing the lyrics and practicing the notes of the melodies I could not reach in the session. The half an hour I spent does not including the time I spent warming up my voice, which took around fifteen minutes. I had provided two audio clips, one of me singing the first verse of the song prior to my practice, and one after my second session of personal practice. You can hear my voice cracking and straining in the first recording, whilst in the second my vocals sound much stronger and I am able to hit the higher notes. Spending more time on the lyrics has also meant that I almost have them memorized. However, I always get nervous whilst performing and it often makes me forget my lyrics so I am going to need to learn my lyrics further.

I do think that my personal practice was worthwhile, as I have increased my singing capability and I know the lyrics better than I did during the original workshop session. I did not meet my target of memorizing all of the lyrics, but I did manage to hit the notes I was not before, as well as work on my breathing whilst singing. I also personally think that you can hear the difference in the recordings I have provided. Overall, I think that my personal practice was successful.

I will continue to learn the lyrics and hopefully be able to sing the entire song confidently. As well as this I will always make sure I am warmed up before my sessions, and I will work harder on breathing properly with my diaphragm. I have learnt recently that you should imagine a rubber band around your waist whilst breathing, and that whilst breathing in you should try to push the band outwards as if it is stretching. Next week me and the band I am in are also wanting to practice another song, Put Your Records On. This means that we will be working on two songs at once so we will have more personal practice to do. Managing this is another target I have set for myself.
