In the study I chose, Realistic robotic cats were introduced to people with Dementia to see how it would affect their behaviors and moods. By positively impacting behavior and mood it could have a great impact on quality of life (Hastings, 2021) Each person was given a cat, and it was noticed that when the cats were touched and petted they made purring and meowing noises and moved by artificial intelligence, which calmed the Dementia patients and provided a sense of calming. People with dementia find it comforting to be able to care for something and have basic interactions such as talking and holding the robotic cats as well as having a companion to love again. The robotic cats were great as they did not talk back and they were able to tell the cats stories (Whiteside, 2023).

I absolutely love this concept. I have seen it and it works. Early on in my career, I worked in a Dementia unit and we had a mix of combative and sweet patients. We had pet therapy that would come in but some patients wanted to hold and hug the animals and would not let them go and we had patients that tried to hurt them. We heard about a program like this one with uses robotic cats to help our patients. We did not have funding but we found a similar "fake" cat that purred and moved. We tried it out and it was a huge hit. We raised funds to purchase more of these cats and noticed a huge improvement in our dementia population. Our cats were on the low scale of these robotic cats, but it was a great start with low funds that we could accommodate and we saw an improvement. Being able to see the smiles on our patient's faces was priceless. Being able to see the impact that these cats had on our patients was amazing. Our patients were calmer and took ownership of the cats. They seemed to have a sense of caring for something that was theirs.
