He's making a face here, but he was crying before the picture because he didn't want to get a haircut. Society has taught us gender binary and that each gender has a particular way of acting and how they should dress. My siblings and I grew up with the mentality that boys are supposed to have short hair and girls are believed to have long hair. When my brother's hair was getting long, we would tell him that he would look like a girl. This is something that shouldn't be done. I went to visit my grandparents a year ago, and as you can see, my grandma, sitting down, is wearing what defines her as a hard-working woman. She always has her apron 24/7 because she is dedicated to doing house duties. She cooks and cleans the house while my grandpa goes out to work. When my grandpa returns home, he expects his food to be ready. Sadly, in my Mexican culture, we face a lot the patriarchy, and 'women are weak' my grandparents are a significant example of this. Previously he got in trouble and wanted to cry; he then said that boys don't cry and showed me how boys are supposed to act and be. She hates the color pink, doesn't like wearing skirts or dresses, and when she feels that her hair is too long, she'll asks her mom to cut it. In childhood, adults tend to limit the little ones and tell them they aren't supposed to dress or act a certain way because of their gender. Girls are supposed to wear skirts and use the color pink, while boys are supposed to wear pants and use the color blue. This girl's mom doesn't portray that the little one is capable of clothing the way she wants without being punished by it, which doesn't make her feel less, nor does it make her feel uncomfortable, and in our workplace, we never force her to do 'girly' things. She is someone who keeps very close to her culture and values. As you can see, she is wearing a skirt, and this is something her culture has planted in her. For any other culture, women can dress in either pants or skirts wherever they feel comfortable. But this is not the case for my mom. She was taught that a skirt is something that defines her as a woman, and she has to wear it.
