The industry that I chose for this assignment is about healthcare. I feel that healthcare has a strong impact from artificial intelligence. People use technology and it is helping them to live a healthier and longer life because humans have resources in their hands most of the times. AI can be very beneficial to healthcare, it can assist doctors to detect disease, help patients to improve their care. The curiosity hits me when I think about how technology helps healthcare with solutions and can make it even more exciting and important as a topic.

In this padlet, I will try to learn more of how artificial intelligence is being used nowadays in healthcare and what it may look like in the future. I chose to cover three applications, which are AI in diagnostic imaging, AI in precision medicine, and AI in clinical documentation and virtual assistants. In each example I will focus on showing how artificial intelligence helps patients and doctors, and how it can identify the health problems in medical scans and come up with a treatment plan. This is how time will be saved through automated note-taking. Part of this research will also be about the future trends of AI in healthcare and ethical considerations, such as bias in algorithms, and most importantly keeping human judgement in the care of patients. Another part that I will be looking at is the societal impact of artificial intelligence and how it will affect the job market in this industry.

Personally, I am a big believer that artificial intelligence will be beneficial to healthcare, but we have to be responsible with it as well by making sure to use technology fairly and ethically.

Artificial intelligence is helping doctors to read X-rays, CT scans, and other diagnostic imaging faster and more accurately. AI tools can detect tumors, fractures and other abnormalities that the human eye may not be able to detect, and this can all be done by using deep learning and computer vision. This can save time for busy place and increase accuracy. Medical staff have to be careful because AI can make mistakes too if data is limited or biased.
Personal insight: This fascinates me because I can see that machines can support medical professionals, but I don’t see that they can replace them.

Healthcare is having an impact from AI because it is helping medical professionals with the personalized treatments that they create for their patients. The systems can also predict how the patient may respond to the treatment, and in that case it also recommends better outcomes and less side effects. IBM and Tempus have started using AI to match patients with cancer to recommended therapies. The most discussed challenge seems to be protecting sensitive data and that AI may not be fair all the time ethically.
Personal insight: I am a fan of AI and the fact that it can make turn personal data into a treatment plan that fits the patient.

Artificial intelligence is helping with clinical documentation with the natural language processing system and the speech recognition tools. These tools are being used to summarize the conversation between doctor and patient automatically. This is a time saver for doctors because they can focus more on the patients and not worry about paper work. Virtual assistants are a big help as well because they are able to answer common questions and schedule appointments. But there is always a chance of data being used wrong, and the accuracy is not always correct.
Personal insight: I think this will get better and it is great to have because medical personnel can focus on patients and improve communication skills.

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations

I can see artificial intelligence changing and transforming healthcare in the future years. The trend where algorithms can identify health risks before symptoms even appear. Using robotics to assist in surgeries is another great invention that will help with higher precision. Generative AI will also help doctors to summarize patient histories and findings about them . Artificial intelligence will play an even bigger role in healthcare by tracking disease outbreaks and will be able to manage hospital resources more efficiently.

As AI grows and becomes more powerful, there are still ethical concerns about it and they seem to increase. It seems to be a major issue of the patient's privacy because the system needs a large amount of data and it always depends on who is controlling and recording it. Another concern is the bias in algorithms because AI is mostly trained from only one group of people and this can cause inaccurate results and could lead to unequal care. Another thing is that patients should know when their information is being used.

Personal insight: I am a big believer that the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare will be big, but it will also depend on a balance between ethics and innovations. It is exciting to think of all the possibilities that it will bring to better prevent diseases, faster diagnosis, and personalized treatments. I also think that it’s crucial for different groups to be involved in the data recording so that every patient gets treated fairly and the privacy of each patient gets respected.

Societal Impact

Artificial intelligence is making great changes in healthcare and they are affecting society as well in positive and challenging ways. The positive side can be that healthcare is more efficient and accessible. Patients can communicate with virtual assistants and get answers faster to common health issues. AI power tools on the other side help doctors write faster and more accurate diagnoses. All these improvements can save lives and improve healthcare. It is also very beneficial for busy hospitals.

But I have to say that according to many readings there are also many societal concerns about artificial intelligence in health care. Medical staff are worried about their employment. They fear that their positions will be replaced by artificial intelligence robots. Many workers will need new training to get adapted to more technology. Privacy is another concern that society talks about. They fear that their personal information is being used and not stored securely. Equity is another challenge that society fears because so far we see that artificial intelligence tools are being practiced in wealthy hospitals only, and people fear that poor people may not get the benefits of the AI.

Personal insight: I believe that healthcare has a bright future ahead and makes society happy. Healthcare can improve many lives if it is developed in the right way. Everyone should get equal access to AI tools that are being used in healthcare. AI should include everyone no matter who they are and where they live. We can have a very healthy future if we'll be able to balance the innovation with ethical responsibilities.

This research was an eye opener about health care. It’s amazing how much technology is affecting it to change. I learned that AI is helping doctors to get a faster diagnosis, it’s helping doctors to save time and even predict illnesses before they happen. Finding sources was not easy because there is so much reading and writing about this subject since it’s changing so rapidly, but I tried to focus on official healthcare sites. This assignment helped me understand how data and privacy are connected with technology. The future looks bright because I can see that AI can help patients. But these tools need to be used responsibly and carefully in order to really help patients.
