Being an ESL teacher in Malaysia_The Q&A by NUR SYAFIQAH BINTI YACCOB Moe

Hi, I am Nur Syafiqah from Malaysia. I teach English as a second language to high school students in a semi-urban school in Melaka, Malaysia. Also, a part-time PhD student at National University of Malaysia. Feel free to ask any queries you may have. I'd be interested in learning more about how the education and teacher training systems in Malaysia and America are similar or different :)

1. I'm interested in your teacher training in Malaysia - do you get training or experiences in population areas that are seen as low socioeconomic or high-needs areas? Here, we don't really get practicum or student teaching experience in those types of areas; therefore we are kind of underprepared in helping those students.

2. You mention annual exams, would you say that these are similar to the US's standardized testing? Does Malaysia rely on these exams to determine funding and/or appropriation of supports?

1. Since you teach English as a foreign language in Malaysia, are your classes most times conducted only in English? Do the students in your class all have a language in common or do some of them speak a different language? For example, do all your students speak Malay, or do you have student's whose main language is Chinese or Hindi together in your English Class?

2. Since you saw your education in the United Kingdom, when you teach them words do you use the British dialect? Like for example instead of teaching them the word trash can, do you use rubbish bin?
Do your students get taught the British pronunciation of things or do you teach a more standard English way of saying it?
