Basically John the Baptist is saying that Jesus is going to come and he is going to be hated. But whoever believes will become a child of God. Not through a physical birth, but through a spiritual birth

How it applies: Many people have said no to God in my life and I've lost friendships over it. But, it's this verse and Mark 13:13 that get me through the difficult times. John goes on to say that there is someone coming who is more holy than himself. That even though no one has seen God. The man who is coming is God, and will show us God. 

How it applies: Alot  of people who live now base their faith off of sight. And no one in our generation has seen God. So our situation is the same as it was 2,000 years ago. Someone who is God and is going to show us God is coming. Here Pharisees come to find a way to arrest John. John tells them he isn't Elijah or the messiah but he is just a man clearing the way for The Messiah. He says that he is baptizing with water, but the one who is coming will baptize with the spirit

How it applies: People are going to come up to you like the Pharisees did. But our situation is no different than John's 2,000 years ago. John didn't know at first that it was Jesus who he was baptizing. The way he knew that he was baptizing the messiah was that the holy spirit in dove form came down from the heavens.  Then Jesus goes and gets his disciples. Then he changes water into wine

How it applies: You have to have blind faith when following Christ. Like the disciples they just got up and went. Also you have to always be looking for him. Here Jesus clears the temple and gives his first sign of his own death. He says that the temple will fall and he will rebuild it in three days.  Also while he was in Jerusalem people started following him but he wouldn't trust in others because he knew who was bad.

How it applies: In life sometimes you're going to do something and people are going to want to be your friend. They just want something from you besides your friendship. Only do what God wants you to do. So this conversation is the one with Jesus and Nicodemus and Jesus tells Nicodemus that he needs to be born again of the spirit.  Then Jesus told Nicodemus arguably the most famous verse in the Bible John 3:16. 

How it applies: To live a life of a Christ follower by just going through the motions isn't good enough.
