In this painting, we have the impression of seeing little rats of the opera rehearsing in front of their teacher, but they are in fact minor girls from underprivileged families who were often forced to prostitute themselves. At that time (19th century), even the greatest dancers had to prepare in homes reserved for subscribers. These subscribers were very rich people who could decide whether or not the dancers would succeed. They therefore came during rehearsals to watch the dancers and decide which one they would like to sleep with. The man we see in the center of this portrait is therefore not a teacher but a subscriber observing the young girls.
