All three of these network peripherals perform similar tasks, but they operate differently and have different uses. They all connect multiple internet-capable devices to a single network.
Hubs: the most basic and cheapest of these devices: when a hub receives data, it simply rebroadcasts it to every connected device, without screening the data and its intended address prior.
Switches: smarter versions of hubs. They inspect the data they receive to determine the intended destination, and then forward it to only

the intended recipient.
Routers: have a slightly different task: they connect two or

more separate networks. For example, a switch will connect

all the computers on a school network, while a router will connect the school network with another network, such as the Internet.

A network allows people with machines called "clients" to connect to other clients or to a server.
