While heading home from an away meet during an icy evening in January, Haley Scott DeMaria faced the possibly of losing her ability to move after the women's swim team charter bus hit a patch of black ice and flipped. Two of Scott's teammates died in the crash and Scott broke her spine.

Directly after the bus crash Haley remembers complaining to her friend about the pain in her back and the cold. It is likely the snow prevented the swelling in her broken spine, explaining her miraculous recovery. Her injuries were the most severe of all the swimmers, the hospital staff told her coach. For the first week in the hospital she was paralyzed from the waist down.

After the surgery the doctors expected that if she did not move in 48 hours, she would be paralyzed for life. A week later she was able to move. From then on her recovery was remarkably quick. Because I could not find any specific information on Haley's exact spinal injury, Mrs. Foy said it would suffice to include general information on spinal injuries.
