Today, low-income students are four and a half times more likely to drop out of high school, and even those who are academically proficient are far less likely to complete college. The gap in SAT scores between wealthy and poor students has grown by 42% in the last two decades. And financial stability has become less attainable even for college graduates, with only one-third of adults under 35 forming independent households.

My Personal Experience of the Benefit Trap

The birth of my daughter was a very difficult time, I was a single parent as her father and I separated when I was 2 months pregnant. As a result I was in receipt of income support from her birth, I was unable to manage work and afford nursery fees. When she was 18 months old I tried to look into getting back in to the working market by improving my skills and going back to college, I was faced with a job centre worker telling me that not only was there no help I could access but that I was better off on benefits , I felt destroyed. When my daughter was 2 and half I took a big leap and started applying for jobs I was lucky to be offered a position in social services, however before I could accept the position I had to weigh up the affordability considering my rent, council tax, nursery costs etc. finally I found I could do it. It was not easy by any means!

Poverty and education are inextricably linked, because people living in poverty may stop going to school so they can work, which leaves them without literacy and numeracy skills they need to further their careers. Their children, in turn, are in a similar situation years later, with little income and few options but to leave school and work.
