In the counseling profession it is possible to reach a point of no return based on how deep you get involved in your clients situations. It is imperative to have a strong self-awareness AND a strong support group (co-workers, friends, family) who can help identify when you need to take a step back and take care of yourself.

It is important to know my limits and when I am approaching them. If I get too involved, I will lose myself and then my abilities, knowledge, and skills are of no benefit to anyone including myself.

I have a wonderful team at work that listen, observe, and make suggestions. I have animals to help me decompress and a fish tank to stare at. I am usually good at leaving work there. I also have adult children who are attuned to their mother's moods and will ask questions if needed.
