I think so because when he arrived to America instead of coexisting with the Native Americans that were here he decided to to enslave them and kill them. He was just a man who sought notoriety and riches. After discovering for himself and the eastern half of the world that there was  land yet to be colonized he received this and set in action the colonization of the Americas. Of course he set in motion several terrible events that led to the genocide and displacement of the natives already inhabiting the land, but I don't believe that automatically makes him a villain. For several Europeans he brought new agricultural products and generated discussions about ethics and religion.
