I personally really enjoyed reading „Lies we tell ourselves“ by Robin Talley.

The story contains many interesting and usually pretty heavy topics, like rasicm and the handling of sexuality back in the late 50s wich I find very interesting. Especially the first chapters where a little painful to read because of the rough insults and the bullying. Although I think that sometimes that´s necessary to portray what happend to the black people back then realistically. Overall, I have to say that it was very easy for me to read and understand the book and I guess thats partly because it´s written so lightly even if its not a typical love story. Unexpectedly, I found the book very refreshing and catchy.

One thing that I really like about it, is that it´s written out of several perspectives that make the story very complex and less superficial than others.

Watching these two ladys growing togerther and breaking the boundaries that narrow them down is beautiful and lovely. Seeing Sarah not giving up in such a difficult and terrible position and seeing Linda opposing her parents and forming her own opinion based on her own experiences is inspiring.I can´t really say anything bad because to me there is nothing bad to talk about when it comes to this book. I totally recommend reading it.

Dear Sarah,
at first I wan`t to say that I think you are the stronges Person I know. I think I wouldnt even survive one day at Jeffason-High. I think I wouldn`t even get into the Building! It is a mirucle that you did not loose hoope and graduated as first "colored" Student at Jeffson-High.
I really want to know the secret behind your motivatin. How did you manage to not loose your mind even though everyone was calling your names and you still hade to be polite? Or dident freaked out when teachers treated you unfair? But you not only survived the horrible treatmend at School but you eve were Always a good doughter aldhough your parents did not listen to you an dident care About what you were thinking About it. I wouold scream at my parents and do Nothing if they would punishe me for a ideea wich was at the end really good but you stayd calme and polite.
But the Question I was asking my slve the whole time: How did you Keep your Feelings for Linda a secret? How could you carry one even thaugh you could tell nobady what you were thinking About Intigration; your relation to your parents or your Feelings? Your last yeare at School was difficult and exhausting and you couldnt talk About it. Evry one wuld have gone craszy but not you. You stayed calm, polite, friendly an you even became a better Person: You supported intigration and helped the movement but still you found at the end a good ending for your own storry.
I thinck everyone should regarde you as an example. I hope you will stay such a wonderfull Person and enjoy your time at college.
Your sincerely Marie

When I started to read "Lies we telle ourselves" I thought it would be boring because the first 6 chapters are just About the first day of School. But then when I started to read every da one chapter it got more interesting. Now I am thinking it is a really great book because you get some Knowledge About racism, About how Integreation worked and hhow difficult this time was.I also öiked the Charakters becaouse they were different and you got two different Points of view. And the development of Linda, Sarah and theyr relationship is exciting. I would definetly recomend this book becouse it is well written and you get new Knowledge About Society in the 50s. Also the relationship betwe the tue maincharakters is interesting and after one Point you dont want to put the book aside until you know the end of Lindas and Sarahs story.

The book "lies we tell ourselves" from Robin Tally won the Lambda Literay Award this weekend, so here follows the summary of Sara`s and Linda`s senioryewar:
Sarah is part of an intigration program. She is with some other kids the first colore students at Jefssaon-high. The book starts with the first day of school. It is afull. Every one is ahouting, calling them names and bullying them. THe problem is that it stays this way the whole year.
Alredy at the nfirst day sarah notices Linda but only after a few weeks they meet. The reason is that they have to work togerther on a ferench projekt. During this project they get closer during discussions. Sara already notices that she likes Linda so during one of their discussions she couldent hide her feelings anny more an kisses Linda. An other girl sees this so they cannot talk about it. After this event Sarah and Linda stopp talking to eache other and dont even looke at eache other.
During this break a lot of things happen for examle Sarah starts to date a boy from the integration Program. Another boy gives up and goes back to his colored school. Sarah also sings a beautiful solo at a christmas concert. But during all of these events Sarah is not talking to Linda because she´s feeling ashaimed about their kiss.
After bouth seeing a colored boy beeing beaten up by some white students they must work together to help him and they get closer again. Then Linda writes an articel where she tries to explain to the other students how wrong it is to bully the colored students the way they are.
But after publishing this she gets a lot of hate from the other students and she also couldent returne home. So she spends the time with Sarah and when they kiss this time for both it feel right.
After this kiss every things turn good: Linda gets away from her terrible father, Sarah can graduate, as first coloured student at Jeffson-High and they can both go to the same college.
