El museo fue fundado por Rafael Larco Hoyle cuando tenía 25 años. 

Hoyle comenzó a coleccionar esculturas para el museo por sí mismo. La primera pieza que tuvo el museo fue un regalo de su padre en 1923

Su padre ayudó mucho a Hoyle cuando comenzó el museo. Con la ayuda de su padre, Hoyle recogió más de 45.000 piezas.

These expeditions had led to several archaeological discoveries as well as the opportunity to publicize text. The Museo Larco contains more than 5000 years of ancient Peruvian history. These texts are important today in understanding Pre-Columbian history.

Visitors can walk and explore over 30,000 shelved artifacts, with the Museo Largo being one of the first museums in the world to expose their storerooms to the public.
