Thinking through Drawing - The Collector day 2

Today we had to experiment with drawings and our collection. It had to be at least four different approaches to our "instalation".

My first drawing derived from a handbook called prayers for peace. I used a blue cardboard to represent the colors used by Mary mother of Jesus, and drew her using only a white and a golden pen. The white was used to make the outlines of the drawing, while the gold was used to paint all the gold on her costume, crown and accessories. My intention with this was to bring attention to the representation of wealth used by the Catholic church. I also intended to add more figures to the drawing, overlapping her image with other characters; but the feedback I got from the teacher and friends was that the drawing worked well the way it was, so maybe I will only add some words to it later (or not, cause my grandma liked the drawing, and maybe I'll give it to her. Something I can't do if she really understands what I meant with the complemento of the words). It took me almost all day to make it, so I didn't finish the task on time, but I tried to finish the others faster, using quicker ways to represent my work.

My second drawing was inspired in a poster from a church I found in my town. The poster said:" Whichever the moment or situation, get a call from God in your life", and it included a number with the saying: call or send a message trough whatsApp. I reproduced the poster almost exactly like it was originally because the poster seems clearly fake, although it isn't (including the number). My main challenge was related to the lettering in this one. The paints I tried to use didn't have enough pigment in them and using a paint brush wasn't a good idea for me, cause the letters were too small and the acabamento didn't look good; so I later changed to a white posca, but the pigment wasn't enough again, for it to look like a print, and trying to cover the spots with less color made the paper tear. So maybe, next time I could glue the letters on, or carve out the letters using a scalpel. (Which I considered doing in the first place, but I didn't have enough time).

The third drawing was aimed to the holy spirit image, that is represented by a white dove. I was gonna put it in a red background that would fade and merge with the color of the paper, but again the paint was a problem and it had no pigment AT ALL, so to make it more red in the center, I left some ink with water in the space that was supposed to be the holy spirit and left it to dry while I was making the second drawing. In the end when I came back, it had formed the shape of a heart, and I loved it. So I ended up putting the dove underneath this part, so we could see the heart. I always hear from people how the error or accident can become the best thing about a work ( like the hand shot from the "red" curta, or the voices in "Sally and joe" which were all originally unintentional but were my favorite things from the video project), but usually when I make an error it just looks bad and pisses me off. I hope this happens more often.

Earlier today, I was talking to my boyfriend about artworks or music or any kind of protest about an specific cause. Our focus was on the issue of rasing awarness from an specific subject that you care about but are not inserted in the context. He gave me the example of a female group of anarcopunk girls that made a funk about the life in the favelas of Rio, and the fight that black woman go through. None of those girls came from favelas, neither were from black heritage. I told him that it was a good thing to relate to someone else's pain, and fight for the causes that needed attention, cause even though they did not went through the pain of those people, a message somehow was heard, cause it got someowhere, and the proof of that is that he listened to it. We did not get to an aggriment on the issue; From his point of view (and I know this is true) there are people trying to get visualizacao from topics that are trending, and the hole point is lost when you don´t really put those beliefs in practice.
I though somehow, this song, or whatever you can put on the same terms, would make at least SOMEONE reflect, and rethink their behavior, and that was already enough.
Now, as I was searching through the bibliography of the protest brief, first I got mad that that they wrote the name of Guerrilla Girls as Gorilla girls, just because thay use a gorilla mask to get anonymous (also, the type project had an artist who should not be in the list - in my ipinion - because of his background); Anyway, when I got to Marcio Freitas I went straight to his website. The first thing you see in the home page are really strong, big images of women, with a red painted hand that covers their mouth. It was clear for me the feminist message. To get access to the rest of the website, you have to clickin a link that says ''Storytelling Arts''. There, you can find in big bold letters: "I believe art should trigger action through deeper reflexion. My artwork brings to surface stories that invite awakening". It also says, in the same page that his work is devided between artwork, advertising and film. Just surch through the advertising portfolio and you can find images like the one I put int this post. And I think that rapped up my debate with Lucas (my boyfriend).
Don't raise flags for something you don't undestand and don't really believe from the bottom of your heart. It's NOT enough to raise awarness if you don't apply all the rules to your self. You are NOT helping if you only use words (or images) and forget your own actions.

NOTE TO SELF

Today's session was all about finding our cause and coming up with a phrase for our posters.
I tried to run away from feminism but I couldn't. So, when the teachers asked us to do a brainstorming on the subject, I decided to do one about the good words on feminism, what it meant and what it could mean for girls; and one about the bad words, the reasons we need feminism. It was one of the hardest tasks for me, because the subject is too personal, because the suffering is too big, because the oppression is so strong and it is EVERYWHERE, in the minimal details, in the streets, in my house, in me. At one point I couldn't keep thinking about it, the anger became sadness and I had to breathe a little. I didn't finish the task (finding my phrase) on time, and had to do a much bigger research on the subject when I arrived home. The most shocking conclusion to me was that rights exist since rights exist, and since rights exist they exist only for men. BASIC human rights were given to woman LAST CENTURY (in Brazil. In some countries woman are still considered less then man but more than animals) and NO ONE GAVE IT TO US. In thousands of years NO one gave rights to us. We had to literally die in mass for every single right we have now. While man just had to come up with the rights and apply it to themselves. Woman are humans, we are exactly equal to men but don't have human rights. So if I'm equal to men, from now on I'll just tell everyone I'm a men whenever they ask. Be in whichever situation or platform.
Anyway, while we were working on our activities Michael asked me, what was the public I was trying to reach. I said it was men. He then asked me, what kind of language I was gonna use to reach out to them. That caused a really big polemic in some of my classmates who were also working on the same subject. Jullie said she didn't care about what men had to say on the subject. I disagreed. I always treated feminism in a very aggressive way. But what Michael had to say had me thinking about whether men would back off even more from the subject if it were to be presented to them in a way they felt threatened ( which happens a lot, sexo frágil)
My final outcome is "red for blood not love" and I don't like it. But it has been really hard for me trying to come up with a good one. Still trying.

My collection is about church panflets. I'm personally totally against all kinds of things that impose an specific tought or way of behaviour, and that is usually what happens with religion (not all of them, of course but the main religions here in Brazil). I was interested in knowing how people make propaganda for god, and I thought I would get some pretty shocking results, with ridiculous content, pushing people to believe nonsense or even hate speech. Surprisingly for me, that was not the case. The main focus is usually self-help. Like tips on how to have a good mariage or thousands of different prayers for different problems. So, in my point of view they mean that, church and prayer and god can get you to achieve your goals, and that's why I went for the classic sanctuary display. I have a pretty religious family so I have two of those in my house. I chose the locker because sanctuaries (at least the brazillian ones) usually have two openings in each side and a space inside where you can put your saint with all it's belongings and prayers, etc. I did not like the final result, beacuse there was too much space left, and visually it did not look as much as a sanctuary I tought it would, specially because it did not have a saint in it, only images of those. So I found a sculpeted head and put a blue paper envolving it so it would look just a bit as a saint. But it did not.

Today we took a look at some more artists and the way they display their collections. The key word was TYPOLOGY which means study of or analysis or classification based on types or categories; and is very different from typography, a word I used to confuse with it. We then had to think about different ways to display our collection. My main source of inspiration was Martin Creed. I loved the way he puts the objects in order of size ( even some of the paintings transmit this idea) and how everything looks organized - i even thought he was a virgo but he is a libra. I first separated it by different religions, but then tried to disassociate with the theme and go for a Martin Creed type of organization. So I got different displays based on size and seen from different angles.
In one of my last Displays, which I think was the most succesful , I placed the panflets on the ceilling as in the cistine chappel, to get the ideia of reaching the sky, and that it is close yet really far, you can't reach it; and also separated by religion. And in the last one, I set up a desk with two chairs, one in each side of it; I set in one of them an invited people to sit in the other to talk about religion and the panflets, that were then displayed in the table. This way, I was also part of the work and could engage a little more and undestand a little bit obout what each one's analysis of religion and also my work.

Today was a day to experiment with printting. We started with monotipia. Using this technique I made some halos and also a drawing of jesus christ (the fake white recognizable jesus) and overall, I really didn't like this technique because the effect that I got from it to me looks like a graffitti hand drawing and what I love about print making is that effect you can't copy with anything else, and the fact that each time it looks a bit different. I also enjoy the traces of paint that were originally not suposed to be there.
The second technique, I did not know and I loved it! For the drawings, I chose different images of a booklet about catholicism; it contained a lot of pictures of landscapes, animals and nature in general. The dypoint technique is really easy to execute and was a surprise for me because from my experiece with xiloh, when you carve something in, that is the part that won't get the paint. I also loved the result because you can left a little bit of paint in the acetate so that the background can also have some patterns. Another beautiful thing abut drypoint is the relief mark that stays in the paper from pressing it against the acetate sheet, you get that feeling of printting even more. I intent to use this technique a lot from now on, the result is awesome and it's really quick to do, comparing to xiloh.
One thing I want to try next time is something I saw from Yasmin work. When her acetate broke, she used it anyway and that gave a totally different face to the whole experiment. It looks more graphic, informal and can even seem like shattered glass.

For my final outcome and presentation I first decided to make an entire new religion based on my concepts, which include acceptance of all people and other religions, liberty, freedom of speech, etc. But that would take me days, so i went for a faster outcome. I did my own church panflets. The first one was based in the famous phrase: "Love your neighbour as yourself", which I though was a mandament, but searching it up, I found out it is actually a verse: mathew 22:39 I then added that it should include trans people; and I made this one in portuguese so I could handdle it in in the streets, for Brazil is the leading country in the murderer of travestis and transsexuals in the world. The second one was about racism. It so happens that ancient jews looked very similar to their middle estern neighbours, being characterized by having dark skin and hair. Being so, Jesus could never have looked like a tall, european men. Physical anthropology and forensic anthropology uses cultural and archeological data as well as the physical and biological sciences to study different groups of people and with a lot of research, and the help of a medical artist they were able to recreate, as similar as it was ever shown, what could have been the real face of Jesus Christ. It was based on this fact and this image, that I made my other panflet. Which has an image of Jesus, and on the top of it, except for the eyes an image of white, fake, catholic european jesus.

After revising typography terms with lectures made by us, students; we were given the task to look for the letters of the alphabet hidden in everyday objects and different places. This is called pareidolia - a situation in which someone sees a pattern or image of something that does not exist. My most succesfull letter was the ''G"which was originally a tool for pressing, and it looked so much like it that almost everyone chose this for that letter. The task was a success in general for me because I started to see typography everywhere, including after the activity was over. It made me think about how easy it is to make different types by finding inspiration in the different forms the city gives us.
Having done the research, each one were given a letter to work with (mine was the "E"), and starting from the picture we took, the class was asked to develop different typecafes for the determined letter, and choose one of these to later do the 3d object. Because the angle in which I took the picture makes the "legs" of the "E" seem spread, I decided to part form that characteristic to develop my letterform. I tried some designs that were straight, with a more "serious" vibe. But I did not like it because to me it was so serious and simple, that reminded me of life in the office. I discovered that a more fluid form pleased me the most, and after doing some research I found nice inspirations from egypt hieroglyphs. What intersted me was the symbology and how you can "read" something even if it doesn't have letters. I tried to do a design that could look both as a letter and a symbol. I got pretty satisfied with the result I got.
The capital "E" was based directly in the egyptian crook (heka) that means "to rule" or even "ruler". I extended the divergent legs and used the crooks as a serif. The lower case was inspired in the "eye of horus".It can have lot's of meanings, royal power, good wealth and protection. The eye was turned into a rectangular box, along with an extra trace in the middle, for the 3 lines that compose the look. The Line that goes along with the "teardrop" was originally a reference to the marking around the eye of falcons; and I used it as the "leg" of the "e". Both inspirations are symbols as well as hieroglyfs.

Our main task today was to develop a type for the entire alphabet based on the type we did for our designated letter. For this, we were introduced to a platform called calligraphr. My first problem was with the lines designated for the lower case and decender. They were too close to each other, and because my letter E "opens" up, it can look not so graphically accurate if compared to a letter that has a decender. My second problem was that I did all my letters with a pen, straight into the paper. Because of that, many letters didn't end up like I would like them to look, and correct them according to the design that was being developed was frustrating and the finishing looked sloppy.
Later on, I was designated to plan how to transform my "E" into a 3D object.
My go to idea was to make a candle out of it. I looked up some videos on youtube explaining the process and materials, and did not think it was so hard, but I was gonna need an specific material to make the bold, and I could not think of any that would be easy to work with; so I went to the teachers to ask for advice, and was completely discouraged to use this technique since it deals with flammables substances. What they suggested instead was for me to work with styrofoam, because according to them I could easily manipulate it with a determined tool that was available to buy in Kalunga. I went there and did not find it, bit looking up for other materials I found something that I've never seen before and am excited to work with: black hot glue. It was this or modelling clay, but I chose the glue because I could give a nice candle effect to the object, since it drips. And when dried out, I thought it could last longer.

3D 3D 3D! Fun day, with new experiences and learning. I took my Black Hot Glue Gun and worked all day on my letter until 3AM, but it was totally worth it! I did not have much experience with 3d objects, but from now on, I decided to develop some of my drawings with this material. My first challenge was finding out what surface I could work with hot glue. Opposing from my first thought, it doesn't come out from acetate, but it does from steel and glass. Seeing from Jade's work, it can be easily taken off from ceramics materials also, but I chose to work on top of a piece of glass. From my drawings, I decided to work with small layers of circles, one on the top of the other; but it was taking a long time to dry out one layer, and I could not do another until this happened, so I started to use glue sticks as foundation for the object, this way I could put the hot one on top of it vertically, and the space occupied by the foundation would save me time and would give a nice, ready made, firm structure to my letter. This method worked much better than the first one. After I finished the separated "legs" or "lines" it was time to put the pieces together to form the final piece. I tried to insert a thick wire made of metal by warming it up with my lighter, but I did not succeed on putting it on the entire structure because the tip would get could in the middle of the way. I managed to cut it in small pieces to attach only in the connection points. The texture indeed ended up looking a bit like a melted candle. I loved the fact that looking it from other angles it did not look like a letter. It sure could be an hieroglyph or even a crown for Cleopatra.

The day started in a different way, as the students were asked to come to a new location in alameda Itu, instead of going straight to ebac. The building was designed by the same person who designed EBAC and you can see the similarities in the big columns and “box” shape that compose the body of the building. Entering the room where a lecture would take place the vibe was different. It looked like a Greek theater and the finishing was rough yet really beautiful. For me, beautiful places encourage people to stay for a longer amount of time.

The first talk was about galleries collaboration system and was lectured by Vanessa Carlos and Stefan Bechoam. They take part in a project called condo which calls out galleries to host other galleries. All to reach different people in different places. For them, the key words are collaboration and people. The most interesting thing to me was understanding how galleries work, and see that a padronization isn’t necessary; as in everything else in the world. Also, I had never thought of the “contract factor” between artists and galleries. According to them, the contract is there to protect the artist; Giving them a porcentage on their work in all future sales, for exemple. I am still a lot skeptical about it, but it made me think on what could be the processes of protecting my works.

Second lecture was about art websites. The first one presented to us was the aarea project, a platform created to exhibit specific artwork created to be seen online. There is a nice touch to it, the fact that the only thing on display when you access the website is the work of the artist; and it stays on for on month, just like a gallery exhibition.

So far, the works displayed were all created by artists who didn’t attempt to crate this kind of work before. It made me want to accept this challenge, or even curate this kind of website, which would not be easy at all, because as the creators,I don’t know anything about programming, and would depend on other progressionals to keep a website up; but a website is cheaper and much more practical then owning a gallery.

The second website is the artload and I had already used it before, since Michael mentioned it as reference. When this happened I was actually a bit frustrated since most of the artists I looked up weren’t an option of choice. In general, I have already seen websites like this but the twist is that they perform interviews with the mentioned names uploaded in video. Including the beautiful Marina Abramovic.

Another highlight of the day for me was after we came back to uni and Monique presented her work and her path as a self publisher. This is something that really interest me, as I want to work induvidually, without the need to be employed by anyone, and also have a big connection with sesc in Sorocaba. Her ideas are clever and practical. And made me have hope that things can work out. I admire her even more as a woman and visual artist.

Apart from the many lectures we had today (again), our activity consisted in creating 30 ideas for our project, which in my case is a zine, in 30 minutes. That's an idea per minute! And it's a lot. At least that's what I thought at first glance, but I got really surprised with myself. While I was doing it, it seemed impossible sometimes, and a minute looked like 15 seconds. Sometimes I wasn't able to develop a new thing in 60 seconds so ended up having to come up with 2 in the same minute. The result was great! I did not know I was able to do this and I'm definitely using this technique again soon.
My main focus was on absurd yet funny things, like:
- A guide to hatching your first egg
- How to pretend to be a fortune teller
- How to pretend you are Bigfoot and scare a small village
- What NOT to buy in 25 de março
- How to dance badly in public
or subjects that aren't originally funny but that I could give a nice fun twist to it:
- Vandalism methods
- Methods for humiliating politicians
- Country flags colours redesigned
I also really liked the idea of turning one of my favourite movies into a zine. "Hair" is a musical about Vietnam war and hippie culture, it changed my way of seeing the world and myself and it inspired me since I was 5. It would be a really personal project if I went to this path.
I could not decide between my 30 ideas, but I'm definitely gonna save the best ones to work on later when I have some time. Maybe doing a series of How to zines

Finally a photoshop class I could learn something. I had already attended a course for grapgic design before but wasn't able to continue since everyone else already had adobe skills and I did not. All the classes I've taken before were too fast and I wasn't able to go along. This one approached the basic concepts very well I think, and my methodology was to write and draw at the same time I was doing the tasks. If I got lost, I had Julia by my side to help me to catch up. I also recorded it almost since the beggining. My simple diagrams were really helpful, and whenever I had to do something again, I'd go back to it. We learned about colors and animation gif, but my favorite effect was achieved by misaligning the CMYK channels. The result looked like it was made from serigraphy. And as I said before, I love when things look like they were printed manually.
Apart from the first part of the day, we discussed our main ideas for the zine project and I decided to really go for the "hair" idea. I'm gonna focus on the songs, which are really powerful social chritiques, and match with the currentl situation of Brasil.

Ana was our teacher speaker of the day. We were able to take a look at her work with fine arts and it was to me as inspiring as Monique's. Her most used technique is xiloh, but she colors it with a japanese artistry that includes water based paint and brushers instead of rolls. Which I originally did not think was possible due to the classes I had in sesc about xiloh that did not include those details. Her paintings are created with a overlap of matrizes and look very realistic and fluid. I really enjoy doing xiloh and loved the effect her technique gives to the final piece. Another aspect of her work that I loved was the idea of enlarging moments by repeating it again and again in different points of view. I decided to take part in her xiloh workshop that day and discussed with her my zine idea, which was doing a song per page from the movie and focusing each song on a different subject that I think should be broughten up. Her feedback was that I should choose only one of these subjects and focus my entire zine in it. That was it for me, I couldn’t even do the xiloh workshop cause I got stuck on it for the rest of the day it was about 7pm that I found a way to combine the songs and develop something different. It was a very unproductive day for me, but a very inspiring one as well.

Today wasn't as productive as expected. I spent the hole day trying to determin the format of my fanzine. I tought of doing a regular booklet but the pages wouldn't match the amount I needed, to fix that I could use a japanese type of booklet, but for me, it had nothing to do with my project and the pages don't stay open for themselves. The next idea was to make all in one long paper that would unfold to the right, but this one was making the pages bend inside because of the thickness of the pages, so monique told me to go for a regular accordeon format and that's what I did. And it was good cause I could choose the number of pages I wanted. Because my zine is about a movie, I tried to come up with a way to assemble the the pages to negatives. The plan was to make holes along the edges and use black paper with an inside made of tracing paper so you could see through it, but I could not find a way to stick the tracing paper to the black one without making it look trashy. My new idea then is to make all in black and do the illustrstions with drypoint, which is a techinque I found beautiful and among with the mark of the acetate against the sheet maybe I can get a good result.

Because I dindn't come to the print day and my letter was ready, I took the mornig to experiment with prints. I had never tried serigraphy before and was really anxious to do it, but overall I didn't like it because the process takes too long, the paper you use to make the mold is too thin so it's easy to shred and there's a lot of work on cleaning everything up. I switched to a regular cut off and printed it using a regular "rolinho". It was easier to manipulate and the result is much more versatile in my opinion; it was only a bit hard to come up with good compositions but I enjoyed the final result. To make assemblence to ancient egypt I decided to go for basic hot colors such as red , beije and yellow. My favorite one was the mirroed image of my letter cause it doesn't assembles a letter at all, it is kind of a symbolism.
We had to display our work later today and for that I didn't think much. I just glued the prints I think worked best on the wall and to hold my "E" in place I supported it on the moveable stair. In general in thought it worked out pretty well and the feedback I got from the tutors was that it was simple, yet effective and well executed. (:

I got to finish some of my zines and the crit to it was in pairs. Yasmin evaluated my work, and according to her, it I succeeded in transmitting the idea of a movie film with my format of zine. She thought the form of lettering I chose ( dymo label) also speaker to the publication because it reminded her of movies subtitles, something I haven’t considered in the first place but had already thought of the resemblance, even thought I didn’t think people would make the connection . To Yasmin, my publication was well thought of as a hole and well produced. Her only concern was about the paper chosen to the task. (Which originally was supposed to be trancing paper, and because I couldn’ Find it I went with the most transparent I could find in EBAC.) she thought it looks like paper from boxing and unboxing shoes, and I think she is right. Overall, I wouldn’t do do this work again because of how much time and editions I lost. And as I said before, serigraphy is not a technique I enjoy doing, and it was really stressful for me overall, but I’m glad most of the people who looked at it enjoyed more then myself the final result. Probably the thing I like the most about it was the pink vibe I got from the fact that it was all handmade, black and texturized.
