Good work! Sounds like you have a clear focus on what you would like to do. A recommendation for an incentive is a free ticket to an athletic event for every club meeting the student attends. This will only be successful if your school charges for sports tickets like mine does (at least for football and basketball). This would hybridize students interest in sports and engage them in additional math practice. Keep it up! -Kyle

I have been trying to (with no formalities attached) get one of my at risk math students in school more often, and on time! She has been responsive to me telling her we are happy she is at school and that we miss her when she is not, and has been attending school more often. I also see her after class at cross country which I think helped to strengthen our teacher-student relationship. It might be interesting to think about having a positive reinforcement system within your mentoring program when the desired behavior of coming to school is seen!

Katie, I like that you provided a comprehensive presentation on the needs of your school; I did the same. Your study seems like it will be similar to mine in that it will involve an intervention to remedy a deficiency in student achievement. In regards to the intervention, do you think that your administration would be willing to build it into the school plan? This would alleviate some of the urgency in coming up with extrinsic motivators, as the intervention would be a requirement of sorts for specific students that are in need of improvement. Does your school use Link It? If so, you can use this program to help you identify which students would be involved in the intervention (perhaps the students that fall into the "bubble" and "approaching" categories). I am looking forward to seeing how your study grows overtime! -Alison

Good topic! Student involvement in school is something we push at our high school. When talking extracurricular engagement, it may be of interest to track how often a certain club/sport meets. You can have a student involved with a club that only meets once a month compared with a student who is involved in a sport that meets daily. I would expect that the student in the sport is more engaged and has less chronic absenteeism than the student who only stays after once a month. Not all extracurriculars are created equal. Just a side note! Keep it going. Cheers. -Kyle

One thought - you made the link between lower outcomes (academic, attendance, etc.) with a lack of student motivation & self-confidence. Based on my experience, I completely agree. However, you will have to establish a way of objectively making that connection, beyond anecdotal observation. Did you have an instrument in mind to evaluate that? Maybe a self-reported student survey? -RYAN

I am seeing a large lack of self-confidence with students in my middle school as well. I was going to suggest something similar to Ryan with the survey. You could use some type of Likert Scale and then do an analysis. I would be interested to see the differences among students involved vs. not involved, sports vs. arts, and starters/leads vs. bench players/extras. -Katie

I agree with you completely that creating a school culture would be the most effective way to get students to come to school and stay engaged. I do think our TLPs are related because one of the ways students can stay engaged could be through extracurricular activities or being involved in the school. Changing culture is a tough thing to do and I think a mentoring program is a great way to start. Jayce

Great presentation, I completely agree with you that something needs to be done to help educate the esl population about higher education. Most of students within the ESL population at my school are set on working with their parents doing construction or something along those lines and do not even think about college. The data from the performance card supports that as well because I know there is a lower percentage of hispanic students go to 4 colleges than of the ethnicities. I am excited to see the final product. Jayce
