Civil rights movement: Emmett Till's impact

“I thought of Emmett Till, and when the bus driver ordered me to move to the back, I just couldn’t move” (Rosa Parks).

“I thought about Emmett Till, and I could not go back. My legs and feet were not hurting, that is a stereotype. I paid the same fare as others, and I felt violated. I was not going back” (Rosa Parks). Black people could simply not go outside and ride a bus home from work without being criticized. This diminished the name of the American Dream at the time ‘everyone had a chance to live the American Dream’, but if black people did not have a chance how could they fulfill their dreams? Rosa parks explains in two different interviews her thought process in what was going through her mind at the thought of her arrest.

“In one, he was laughing and happy. In the other, his head was swollen and bashed in, his eyes bulging out of their sockets, and his mouth twisted and broken... I couldn't get Emmett Till out of my mind, until one evening I thought of a way to get back at white people for his death” (Muhammad Ali). Ali explains that he ‘thought of a way to get at white people for his death’, showing the common anger that many black people shared at the time towards white people. The American dream was tarnished in the name of racism because it was not a reality for black people, the American Dream had no value in the eyes of people of color because of the cruel actions of racists preventing a successful future for minorities.

Conflict and conformity: The Cold War McCarthyism

The cold war caused a forced conformity throughout the people of America. Senator McCarthy provided an untrustworthy campaign against alleged communists in the US government and other institutions. “Many of the accused were blacklisted or lost their jobs, although most did not in fact belong to the Communist Party” (Britannica). The tactics used divided the people, and made it impossible to carry out the American Dream because many families were torn apart due to these ferocious tactics, and many lives were ruined in the process. Senator McCarthy broke the trust from the people and government diminishing the story of America further.

Literary: The Other Wes Moore

The Other Wes Moore provides many examples in how the American Dream cannot be achieved by every person due to their upbringing. Author Wes was taught values and how to live properly despite his dad passing early in his life, while prisoner Wes finds himself stuck in a loophole of selling drugs and staying on the streets. Prisoner Wes and his friend come together to check on a boy named Ray. They both have guns in their hands. "Wes ran by her and, without even looking back, told her nothing was wrong and to go to bed. The blood on Wes’ face and clothes, and the weapon in his hand, told a very different story” (Wes Moore 105). The American Dream is supposed to be achieved by anybody, yet it seems impossible to become successful when faced with the upbringing of someone like prisoner Wes. With no guide anywhere in life there is nearly no chance that he can achieve his American Dream.

Harlem, the very short poem by Lagnston Hughes is one of the most popularized and impactful writings in black history. Hughes asks the question “What happens to a dream deferred?” Hughes may be describing what happens to black Americans' dreams crushed due to the racial inequality of the time, and how the so-called ‘American Dream’ isn't so much of a dream after all. It is a lie. The Story of America is an unjust time period of political domination through fear, racism, and the inability to achieve the American dream due to upbringing.
