In order to support blended learning, we need to help facilitate team discussions around the various models and possible implementation plans.

I think the structure around the station rotation model is an important place to focus. Think about how kids shift from one task to another. Do students drive the pace individually or are their activities where the teacher drives the pace? Is it important that every student finishes every task or is it okay if students don't finish something? What kind of stamina do students have for certain activities? Can longer activities be broken into smaller chunks and then broken up by different activities that stimulate different parts of the brain?

One tool or tip that particularly stood out to me was the idea to have a strategy in place for those students who might be having an off day. If you have a plan then you can head off the distraction and keep the groups from getting derailed.

First teachers need to understand why the Station Rotation Model is effective (belief in why it works). Right now they are hearing they must use small groups in HMH and I don't know they have the underlying belief of why. Catlin's 10 tips are very concrete that they will start to see how it is possible. I like that she stresses that you must "teach" how the offline and online stations work and not just assume that kids will do them.

I have a plan for implementing grade-level team meetings beginning in January. Lots of thought has to go into these, because the last thing I need is for teachers to see it as ONE MORE THING to do...when I ask them to give up some of their plan time for this process, I know that it as to be absolutely worth that time. My vision here is to focus on three things between January - May: 1. Triangulation of Math data to support teachers in making the most of Freckle, 2. Small group station rotation model (the work we're doing here), and 3. HMH support (we talk about this in a lot of other ways this year, so it's currently in a backseat in this small-group PD model). I have been observing how whole-group PD has gone this year, and it hasn't had the traction I was hoping it would...time to implement small-group intensive instruction for teachers. :-)

We could also offer the station rotation model as a Lunch and Learn to identify who these teachers may be and to give them space to start thinking and designing stations.

I loved the idea of focusing on transitions in the secondary model. Sometimes I think teachers are uncomfortable letting kids work in different ways in the classroom because it can be a management problem, and transitions are seen as an instruction time suck. If we intentionally prioritize and explicitly teach transitions, that would help teachers feel more comfortable loosening the reins a bit.
