In recent years the combination of drug-focused tourism and cheap budget flights have turned the city’s Centre district into a crowded mass tourism playground.

Becaused of the overcrowding the government banned new tourist-oriented shops from opening in the Centre. They also started regulating Airbnb much more strictly, as the housing crisis in Amsterdam reached full bloom.

The rise in tourism has also made it very difficult for local residents in the Centre to find shops to do their errands in.

To my mind in order to preserve the unique character of cities and resort destinations, governments should on the one hand limit the amount of tourists by encouraging private investors to refurbish and upscale their hotels, restaurants,... in order to attract high end tourism, and of course not allowing or at least limiting new projects to only very specific niche markets. On the other hand they have to commit on a short and long term plan to restore the damaged cities heritage/character. Moreover, improve/adapt the actual public infrastructures and services to the number of tourists and residents, such as security, cleaning, medical assistance, ... In addition to this, companies should encourage remote work and flexible schedules which can help reduce people commuting and lives.
