Brighton Beans is a co-produced chickpea meal kit initiative, which has been developed in collaboration with residents of Moulsecoomb.  

In our research work, we learned that people liked the idea of eating more chickpeas. Most people had at least one tin hiding at the back of their cupboard. However, many people weren’t sure how to give them good flavour and make them tasty in their cooking.   

Our aim is to make it easier for people to cook with chickpeas. At the same time, we wanted to find a way to take some of the ‘mental load’ out of everyday cooking. Meal kits provide all the ingredients you need to make a warm and fresh meal.  

In 2024, we ran a series of workshops using participatory methods with the community to help co-produce our kit. During the workshops, we asked the community to share their favourite chickpea recipes and the stories behind them. We explored their experiences of using kits and assessed different commercially available kits. 

We learned that people liked the idea of kits, but didn’t like the expense of them or excessive packaging. They wanted produce that is ethically sourced, and said they were willing to buy into an innovation that had been co-produced by the community. We took this feedback on board, and used it to produce our recipe kit.  

Brighton Beans is a local-level intervention as part of a much bigger UK Research and Innovation funded project, ‘FoodSEqual’. FoodSEqual is a large project involving the Universities of Reading, Plymouth, Sussex, Cranfield and Kent. FoodSEqual’s vision is ‘to provide citizens of culturally-diverse disadvantaged communities with choice and agency over the food they consume’ (Transforming UK Food Systems Strategic Priorities Fund, 2025). This kit has been jointly produced by Brighton and Hove Food Partnership (BHFP).

We want to encourage people to have the confidence to use chickpeas in their cooking at home.  

At the same time, we want to help connect people through their shared recipes and build communities around food.  

Each one of the recipes you try in our kits was suggested or shared by members of the community in Brighton. We introduce you to the person who shared the recipe, and the story behind it.  

We believe in sourcing good quality produce, and supporting local businesses and enterprises. To this end, we have teamed up with Infinity Foods, a Brighton-based co-operative based in the North Laines. Infinity Foods pride itself on its democratic ownership model and selection of organic, natural vegetarian and vegan foods.
