In chanclas Esperanza's feet don't feel the best in these shoes, and in the family of little feet Esperanza gets sexualized in those high heels. All has to do with growing up, growing up and being sexualized. This can show that even in shows you can see how much things can change, as a child you don't have to worry about wearing high heels and being called out by a man and being embarresed or being in pain and embarresed to dance. shoes can tell a lot about someone and sometimes even change who they are or how they see themselves. 



" If you dont get them you might turn into a man" (49)  while reading this i thought i should add it here because there is a lot of meaning to it. Nenny says she believes you need hips to be a women, she thinks that if you dont have hips you will have a man like figure and a man like look. Cisneros tells stories of Esperanza going threw women hood and trying new things. Esperanza threw the book you can see is coming to the egde of her childhood, learning what it comes to be a women, having to deal with older mean hitting on you, dealing with the image of her body not being good enough. Esperanza becoming a women had to come with many obsticles and many emotions, e=Esperanza had to deal with emotions that she had never experienced before because she was still young and a child, it all kind of got sprung on Esperanza and the book makes it very clear of what Esperanza went through and how it changed her. Lucy hides the lemon shoes and the red shoes and the shoes that used to be white but are now pale blue under a power bushel basket on the back porch. " (42) this quote from the Vignette "The family of little feet" it very powerful because it shows that the girls weren't ready at that point, they weren't prepared and they didn't know how to handle being cat called by a old man and being complimented and being sexualized. 
  
Evidence #2: "Everybody laughing except me, because im wearing the new dress, the pink and white with stripes, and the new underclothes and new socks wilth the old saddle shoes i wear to school, brown and white, the kind i get every september because they last long and they do. My feet scuffed and rounded, and the heels all crooked that look dumb with this dress, so i just sit" (47) This quote is showing how Esperanza dealt with being insecure about her shoes and her dress. She was insecure that she couldnt even laugh and have fun with the others, coming of age means that you are growing and seeing yourself different, she noticed she isnt a kid anymore and she didnt like what she wss wearing anymore.

Evidence #3: "I walked past. I knew he was looking i had to prove to me i wasnt scared of nobodys eyes, not even his. I had to look back, just once, like he was glass. And i did. I did once." (72) This quote shows how Esperanza dealt with being looked at by a boy. She always noticed him looking and stood up for herself by looking back, sometimes a look back can mean so much because most girl or women are scared to be looked at by a man because in some cases it is in a sexual way, so they sometimes hide to get away because getting called or looked at by a man is scary to some. But esperanza stood up and looked back.


Evidence #4: " But Four skinny trees with skinny necks and pointy elbows like mine. Four who do not belong here but are here." (74) The four skinny trees is a very powerful vignette because it talks about Esperanza body image, what she thinks is beautiful. She says the four skinny trees look just like her because they are skinny and have some of her body features, if you look deeper into this is sounds like Esperanza thinks that her body image isnt beautiful since she explained it in a negative way. She has a connection with the trees because they understand her. She feels like she doesnt belong, and they trees also dont belong. esperazna has gained a trust with the trees based on the stuff she has compared her daily life to the trees. 


Evidence #5: " marin says that if she stay here next year, shes going to get a real job somewhere downtown because thats were the best jobs are. since you always get to look beautiful and get to wear nice clothes and can meet someone in the subway who might marry you and take you to live in the big house far away" (26)  this quote is important because Marin is a big part of Esperanzas life growing up and coming of age. Marin teaches esperanza about a lot of the women hood and relationships.



evidence #6: But my mothers hair, my mothers hair, like little rosettes, like little candy circles all curly and pretty because she pinned it in pincurls all day."
