Behaviorism, introduced by B.F. Skinner, is the idea that we learn through our environment. In this theory, learning happens when we copy others, and when we do something right, we get a reward, which makes us want to do it again. Language, according to behaviorism, is learned this way too.

Innatism, introduced by Noam Chomsky, is the idea that we are born with the ability to learn a language. Chomsky said that our brains have a special tool called the Language Acquisition Device (LAD) that helps us learn the rules of language naturally, as long as we hear people speaking around us.

How These Theories Apply to Second Language Learning (SLA)

Behaviorism and SLA: Behaviorists believe that learning a second language happens by copying others and practicing a lot. When you use the language correctly, you get praise or rewards, which helps you learn.

Innatism and SLA: Chomsky’s theory suggests that just like when you learn your first language, you also have a natural ability to learn a second one, because your brain can find patterns in the new language.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Behaviorism: A good thing about behaviorism is that it focuses on actions we can see, like speaking, and rewards can help people improve. But it doesn’t explain what happens in our brains when we learn, and it doesn’t cover the full picture of how we learn complex languages.

Innatism: A good thing about innatism is that it explains why children learn languages so quickly and easily. However, it doesn’t explain why adults find learning a second language harder or why things like motivation and practice are important.
