Most nouns that end in an -O are masculine.

Most nouns that end in an -A are feminine.

Be careful of the exceptions!!!

To make a noun plural:
add -s if it ends in a vowel
ex. el gato, los gatos
add -es if it ends in a consonant

If an adjective ends in an -O, you must change the -O to an -A to make it feminine. 
  ex. el gato blanco
         la casa blanca

If an adjective does NOT end in an -O, it can be both masc. and feminine.
   ex. el carro azul
