Immigrants came from many countries to america in order to find a better life and become successful and raise a family. People view the american dream as coming from a low point in someones life and rising up to the top, or "rags to riches" and some people call it. People attempt to go from rags to riches by coming to america and finding a job and grinding in order to give their kids a good education so they they will succeed. In some cases, students would come to america for better education in order to better improve themselves and find work in order to succeed. Many immigrants had different situations so how they achieved the american dream was different.

When the government adopted the policy of individual ownership of land on the reservations, the expectation was that the Indians would become farmers. Part of the plan was to instruct and aid them in agriculture, but this vital part was not very smart. It almost seems as if the government assumed that some magic in individual ownership of property would in itself prove an educational civilizing factor, but unfortunately this policy has for the most part operated in the opposite direction. This made the Native Americans even more spread out than ever before.

For almost all African Americans the american dream was impossible due to many acts and restrictions against African Americans. They were able to come to america and work, but they were used as slaves and were not allowed to vote. It was hard for them to get a good education since they were segregated and frowned upon so that eliminated their chance for success and they were forced to work in order to survive.
