Students in pairs have one who writes and the other dictates. The one who dictates walks to the paper, remembers the definition as much as they can and walks back to tell their partner. Usually they go back a couple times. 

I do the same strategy with dictations (I teach Spanish literacy and it's a common practice for learning Spanish literacy)
