Cognitive development
This age is a time of rapid growth along a number of developmental measures, not the least of which is children’s thinking abilities, or cognition. Across this time period, children learn to use symbolic thought, the hallmarks of which are language and symbol use, along with more advanced pretend play. Children this age show centration of thought, meaning their focus is limited to one aspect of a situation or object. Memory abilities come online and children show their own ways of categorizing, reasoning, and problem solving.
( scholastic.com)
Children can to match two or three primary colours and they enjoying counting up to 20 by rote and understand the concept of number up to three, and they begin to understand he concept of time, and they can talk about things in the past and the future, also they can sort objects into simple categories and groups,
In this age children have increased memory skills so they can remember and repeat songs and nursery rhymes and also they can remember a particular event, and they can control their attention, choosing to stop an activity and return to it without mich difficulty and they confuse fact with fiction, in this age they can understand the concept of one and lots.
By Carolyn Meggitt ( child development, an illustrated guide)

At six months, babies are beginning to understand how the world around them works. They imitate sounds, enjoy hearing their own voice, recognize parents, distinguish between animate and inanimate objects, and base distance on the size of an object. They also realize that if they drop an object, they can pick it up again. At four to seven months, babies can recognize their names.
http://www.healthofchildren.com/C/Cognitive-Development.html#ixzz54NgPfHAT

During the 5-7 age range, adjustments in thinking and reasoning occur as the child moves from preoperational thought to concrete operational thought. Research indicates that most 5 year olds focus on only one single aspect of a situation like how things look or feel rather than logic. Children at this age often struggle with making decisions on the influence of their perception and their logic at the same – thus the term “5-7 year shift.” They generally become fully able to fuse perception and logic (concrete operational thinking) around the age of 7 or 8.

six months
At six months, babies are beginning to understand how the world around them works. They imitate sounds, enjoy hearing their own voice, recognize parents, distinguish between animate and inanimate objects, and base distance on the size of an object. They also realize that if they drop an object, they can pick it up again. At four to seven months, babies can recognize their names.

During the 5-7 age range, adjustments in thinking and reasoning occur as the child moves from preoperational thought to concrete operational thought. Researchers have found that younger children believe that everyone thinks as they do; during the 5-7 shift they become aware that not everyone is “on the same page” as them.
