I will add The Wild Robot by Peter Brown to my third-grade classroom library as a science fiction option. The Wild Robot is a story about a robot who must learn to survive in the wilderness after a shipwreck. It is a story about friendship, survival, and family. Third graders will love this story as it has an engaging plot. It is exciting and heartwarming. This would be a good example to have my class do a cause-and-effect activity.

I will add Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine to my third-grade classroom library as a Caldecott Award Winner. Henry's Freedom Box won the award in 2008. Henry's Freedom Box is a true story of an enslaved man who mailed himself to freedom. This would be a great story to get a lot of classroom discussions going. It is also a story about history and freedom. It could be a great book to read during Black History Month and then do a match the person to their accomplishment worksheet.

A book for bibliotherapy I will add to my third-grade classroom library is Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. This is a story about friendship. It is a Newbery Honor book. This book can help start a class discussion on critiquing and analyzing the reasoning of others. This book can teach students the meaning of friendships and how we treat each other and animals. It will help teach empathy, selflessness, appreciating simple things, and adapting to change. These are all things third graders can learn from and connect with.

I will play I have, who has for a phological awareness activity in my third-grade classroom. I chose this activity because it will allow my students to have a fun, engaging way to practice the manipulation of onset and rime. The words chosen in this example are all high-frequency words and are related to spring. We can keep playing this game with words for each season to keep up our learning and manipulation skills. If we did this all school year, at the end of the school year, the students can even make their own, I have, who has game.

A reading comprehension activity I will do with my third-grade class is a roll and respond activity. This activity helps students communicate about what they have read. It allows them to discuss their ideas with peers or the whole class. The students get at least one partner and a die; they take turns rolling the die and answering the question that corresponds with the number they rolled. The partners or groups of students can come up with their answers and then come together as a class to see how the other groups answered. This roll and respond card can be used with any book, text, or article.

A good diagram to explain the Science of Reading is both the simple view of reading and Scarborough's Rope. The simple view of reading equation shows that decoding or word recognition times language comprehension equals reading comprehension. Scarborough's rope is how word recognition and language comprehension work together. These show that decoding without an understanding of language comprehension is not sufficient for skilled reading. A student needs both to be a proficient reader.

A tool I can use in my third-grade classroom to help English Language Learners is the KWL chart. KWL charts are divided into three sections. The K is "What I know", the W is "What I want to know", and the L is "What I have learned". The chart can be done as a whole class or in small groups. The K and W should be done before reading. The chart can benefit English Language learners with its visual representation, as they can even draw pictures instead of writing out. The chart will also show the students' existing background knowledge.

An activity I will do with my third-grade classroom is reading and writing with vowel combinations. This activity helps third graders master reading and writing vowel combinations. This activity requires the use of explicit instruction on what vowel combinations are. We first must focus on the common vowel combinations first. The use of visual aids helps show pictures that have the vowel combinations. The challenges the students will need help with for this concept are words that have inconsistent spellings, phonemic similarity, and silent letters. These will need to be addressed carefully.

I love this idea of the comfortable, flexible seating. I also like the fireplace full of pictures and the small table. This to me feels like a home and less like a classroom. A comfy place to read alone and enjoy the space. The fireplace makes it feel warm, and the pictures let us bring ourselves into the classroom. I want to give my students a place they will want to sit down and read in.

A research-based resource that could be beneficial for my third-grade classroom is MyView Literacy. It is an elementary reading curriculum that uses a proven model grounded in the Science of Reading and writing. The curriculum has daily foundational skills, vocabulary, and comprehension instructions, small group, and writing activities, all included. A 2023 assessment data from Texas State showed that myView literacy students showed significantly greater ELA scores compared to those who did not use myView. I have even already had the opportunity to use some of myView lessons in the school where I am currently employed. It is very easy to follow, and the students have a lot of practice with a number of different skills.

This is a game we can play each week with our spelling lists and even bring words back from previous weeks to practice. This game transforms a simple spelling review into a fun game. The game is played by calling out the words by their definitions or by using sentences. Students need to identify the correct words on their card to mark it. Another way to make the game more engaging to the students is to allow them to be the callers, coming up with their own definitions and sentences, further deepening their grasp on the word.

This would be a great book to read and then have a classroom discussion on family food traditions in our class. Then make a class family food recipe book. All students in the 3rd grade have to take the I-READ assessment. This assessment is also taken in the 2nd grade.
