10.09.18
Today we were introduced to Part 3. I am very excited for this part as we have the opportunity to create our own project. However, at the same time, I am feeling a little concerned, since I do not have any idea of what I want to make yet.

During the entire morning, Michael went with us through the project proposal guidelines, step by step, answering all questions that emerged to make sure we would not have any doubt on writing our briefs. There is a lot to do and to research. I believe that the most laborious and challenging part will be to plan ahead our action plan, since the deadline to deliver the project brief is September 25th and the deadline to submit the final project is November 21st. I, personally, have a lot of difficulty on planning things ahead, specially when I do not have a concrete idea on my mind.

Later on, we were asked to do two exercises: first, we had to analyze two different sketchbooks, from two different people, and evaluate them (Referral, Pass, Merit, and Destinction) according to research, reflective skills and records, and problem solving. Then, we received a sheet and we had to fill in the blanks with our project idea, theme and probable searches. During this activity, I got stuck and could not write anything. But, to not be idle and unproductive, I began to read some books from the library to see if I was inspired by anything.

I do not have a project concept yet, and I was told that this is not a big issue; it is not good to have everything planned at this point. However, I have already started to make researches on things that interested me so I can chose one and, further than, develop my Part 3 Project.

11.09.18
Our tutor today was Leopoldo and, as soon as he got to class, I ran to sign my name on a list for a one to one tutorial with him. I was still very lost related to what to do for my project, and, when I realized most of my colleges already had something in mind, I got a little frustrated. But the conversation I had with Leo was enlightening. He made me realize that most of my projects have to do with social issues awareness (specially feminism) and that I could/should continue sticking with them for this final project. He also gave me things to research on, such as Maria Quitéria, the book Grande Sertão: Veredas, and the series Explicando, and suggested me to start to think about what art technique I want to work with.

On the rest of the day, I used my time to make a deep research on social problems I am most engaged with (politics, pollution/environmental issues, social inequality, racial inequality, anxiety/depression, xenophobia, and feminism). I spent the afternoon in the mac lab and also in the library, getting book references.

I believe it was a productive day, I acquired more knowledge in those topics I listed above, and from all of them, by the end of the day, I reduced my options to TOP 3 I am most interested on working with: Social Inequality, Environmental Issues, and Feminism. I hope by the end of this week I will be able to pick and focus on only one of them and start to develop better my project.

12.09.18
On today's Independent Study Day, I went to EBAC and I participated on Mariana Zanetti's lecture. I already knew a few of her works, but being able to have a direct contact with the artist, to know more about her creative and work process, and to see some of her references and inspirations was very enriching. Different techniques that she used in some of her illustrations have also caught my attention. In the series of her Flipbooks: Kinocaixa, for example, she used stamps for repeats; and in the book O Leão e a Estrela she took photos of figures and different types of paper over a table of light, creating an effect that refers much to the cinema. These are very interesting mediums and may perhaps serve further as an inspiration for my future project. In addition, one thing she said that I really enjoyed was that "as long as the artist does not settle for his own work, it is interesting to the artist has his style".

During the afternoon, I went to the Mac Lab and delved into research on the TOP 3 subjects I had previously chosen. On one hand, it was very productive because I had a great knowledge about several incredible artists and their respective art works, which already made me have ideas for my project. But, on the other hand, it got more difficult to choose just one subject to focus and work on. Social Inequality, Environmental Issues, and Feminism are guidelines that really interest me, and my today's research on each of them was so relevant, that I still do not know which theme to select.

In an attempt to make my choice a little easier, later then, I made a mind map for each topic, on 3 different pages in my sketchbook. Thus, I would have a broader view on what each of these problems represents in our society and the importance of fighting them. It did not help much, and I got really frustrated with myself because I committed, until the end of this week, to focus on only one social problem; but I am still very confused and uncertain on what I want to do.

However, I still do not know which issue I will deal with nor how.

But, fortunately, today I had the opportunity to have a one to one tutorial with Monique and she helped me a lot by giving me names of places to visit and also some references to look at. I told her I was kind of lost and confused and she was able to calm me down. "What you want to change in people's life?" was one of the questions she made me and that was really impactful for me; this question, together with all her tips, guided my researches to a deeper meaning, from that moment on.

14.09.18
Today we had class with Ana, my tutor. Despite having had excellent and helpful conversations with Leo and Monique about my project, I wanted very much to know Ana's opinion about what I've been thinking so far. So, I asked her for a one to one tutorial. She heard everything I had to say very carefully. About the three themes that I was in doubt, she gave her opinion about each one of them and ideas of different approaches I can/could get.

She also talked to me about something I already knew, deep down, and which I was "procrastinating" do, but now there is no way to postpone it: I have to decide a theme and it can not happen later than today. I need to find a focus, direct my research to this chosen subject, and start thinking about my briefing.

The conversation I had with Ana gave me an "shaken up", in a good way, and soon after, I began to review all the research that I had until now. I made a list of pros and cons in working with each of these three themes I had chosen and was in doubt of; and, for my relief and happiness, by the end of the day I managed to scratch two options. My final decision was: work with the issue of social inequality in Brazil.

I am fully aware it is a pretty wide theme, yet, but it is something I am really interested in. Inequality is one of society's greatest problems and one of the causes of much of the conflicts between people. It is a persistent problem here in Brazil and it seems to me that many people do not want to/refuse them selves to see it; and I want to bring them awareness about this important issue our society faces in years.

I'm super accustomed to receiving briefings and to follow everything that is written in them, but writing my own was quite different. At first, I did not know where to start, since my theme is kind of broad. However, the good thing was that we had a briefing guideline that we had to follow, so organizing ideas got easier.

I could truly understand that a briefing is the basis of a planning process and how important is the time management. As this is a long project, organization and planning things ahead is essential.; and that was one of the things I had the most difficulty on and that I had to overcome.

28.09.18
The first thing we did today was a critique in group. Many of my colleagues did not like it because, for them, it was like "wasting a work time", but I did not see in that way. I believe it was really important sharing with them a little of my project idea and receiving feedbacks and ideas that may help me out. I was told that I have an interesting theme to work with and I have a nice research until now, and the main tip I received from the critique was that I should star, now, making as many experimentations I can; and I agreed with it.

Soon after, I have a one to one tutorial with Ana. She was very attentive, listened to me carefully and gave some helpful advices. We also came up, together, with some ideas for my project; such as collages and installations (I'll make research on them later on).

I used my time during the rest of the day to to delve deeper into my research on economic inequality in Brazil and to update my sketchbook. The ideas are different from each other, but they all seem to be engaging in their own way, so I do not know how to choose only one. I feel I am not focusing the way I was supposed to and overthinking excessively with the outcome, instead of worrying about the actual process of the project; leaving a little aside the purpose of my work and the message I want to pass.

After a deep breath, I sat down today and started to write on my sketchbook all the ideas I have and the potential of each one of them. Also, I made a list of art techniques I am most interested in, looking for which one would combine better with my ideas.

02.10.18
I confess that today was a difficult day for me to concentrate. This is due to the arrival of my parents here in São Paulo, and, since I have not seen them in a long time, I have spent most of my day thinking about my reencounter with them.

So, to see if time passed faster, I decided to make experimentations with some of the techniques I have learned during the Foundation Course and that, now, is one of the mediums I am most passionate about: woodcut.

Carving the surface of a block of wood until it formed the image I planned was very enjoyable. For me it was just like therapy; it was able to relieve all (or almost all) my anxiety.

After I was done with the entire process, looking at the final result was really pleasing. It is clean, well executed and passes the message I want to. Meanwhile, perhaps there is an issue: when you take a look at it, you instantly understands and gets my social critique. However, I guess one of the main goals of my project is to make people to reflect, open their minds and search for the problem. I do not want them to understand the meaning right away. I want my work to be carefully analyzed and to grab people's attention as much as it can.

Anyway, I believe making this experimentation was really important and it helped mea lot to focus on my project, instead of letting my anxiety take over and paralyze me. It was a nice day of work.

04.10.18
Today was a busy day. I, together with a small group of other Foundation students, had a workshop with the BA team. I had previously planned to work with the BA girls during the morning and focus on my project the rest of the day. However, the workshop took longer than I expected; something I thought it would not last more than two hours ended up taking almost the entire session.

I understand that helping the BA with the visual identity and propagation of the Final Year Exhibition is extremely necessary, but dealing with this, together with my project, is getting very complicated; I feel I am getting more stressed than before. However, since I have already compromised myself with it, from now on, I will try my best to manage this situation and be ready for unexpected circumstances.

Despite all that, I found time to continue to make my experimentations. Today I worked with collages. I tried to mix luxuous and not so luxuous objects/situations. I really like the results, I just wish there were more things at the magazines I could work with. So, thinking about that, if I end up using this technique for my project and final outcome, probably I will make it digitally, so I can have a bigger range of things to put into my work.

And I need to do this as soon as possible, because, in case something goes wrong, I will have enough time to correct it. I will probably research on how to make a photography mosaic tomorrow; today I spent the whole day selecting the photos that will compose the mosaic and editing them. It was very tiring, but the pictures are looking amazing. I hope my idea works out fine and that everything goes well (*fingers crossed*). I'm excited to see how it will look like.

23.10.18
I dedicated my time today to the research on how to make a photography mosaic. I thought that I would have to separate each photo by color, that it would take hours to create the mosaic, and that would be very complex thing to do. However, for my happiness, while I was doing my research, I found a site that is specifically for creating these type of mosaics; it is called http://www.easymoza.com. All I had to do was to select the main image, then select the photos that will be used to recreate the main photo (minimum 50), and, after that, the site created the final result. In this website there is also the option to save the image in low quality (for free) and with a higher quality (which I had to pay for).

I got very relieved and satisfied with the result. Something I thought it would be the most laborious part of my project was actually the easiest thing.

Later then, I just had to decide the size and scale of my work. In order to do that, did some tests using the wood plates in our studio as reference. And I ended up choosing 150cm x 210cm. The reason why I picked such a big size is that I want my work to be very impactful and attention grabber; and I believe I will get the result I expect.

26.10.18
I spent most of my day today unproductive; again. I do not know if it is because I am extremely tired these couple days or if it is because I want to do several things at the same time, consequently ending up doing nothing, but today it was very difficult and hard for me to focus.

Nevertheless, my day was not totally wasted and unfruitful just because, almost by the end of class, I had a one to one tutorial with my tutor, Ana, and she was very helpful. Meeting with her was very significant because I was able to discuss and make important decisions (which I did not think about until that moment) alongside with her; such as how am I going to display my work (we thought about hanging the panel on the ceiling) and places in the studio where would be better to expose it.

Also, another issue was that I still did not know where I could make the impression of my mosaic. I told Ana this and, as soon as the class was over, she took me to Giclê, where they make prints according to the museum's standards for permanence and with the largest chromatic scale possible today.

There, I discovered that they can print the exact size I need, and that is already a good point. Now I just need to know if the price will be affordable. I talked to Milena, who works there, about how my work could be printed, in which type of paper, and she will make a budget for me and send me by email. She also explained me how should I prepare the file so that can make a really nice fine art print.

Even though I do not know how much it will cost yet, I feel that I will end up making my project print with them because they offer what I need and their products have a very high quality. I loved to know Giclê and how they work.

The result was kind of expected: it was bad. Shitty. I started freaking out because I found out that this problem was due to the website I used to make the mosaic, even though I paid for the high quality option. It simply would not work for the size I needed, which is huge.

I called Ana in a desperate attempt of seeking for enlightenment. She came to see me and said that I should send the archive to Giglê despite the poor resolution because fine art printing is a high-quality type of printing anyways, but that, if this test goes wrong, I would have to find another way to accomplish my project. The only thing I thought was, therefore, making it manually.

Right after I sent the document to Giglê, I started researching how I could make the mosaic on Photoshop. It was too good to be true. All my expectations of resolving my project using just one tool (that isn't even mine, which is, the website) want down the hill. Now I need to solve this problem on time.I think I was naive, I took the easiest path, but it had a price.

Therefore, I kept on preferring my new mosaic since the quality, the colour and the position of the images are better. My peers also preferred the one made manually.

10.10.18
I was taking a look at the pictures I took yesterday from the favelas near Brasília and they are pretty good. They have a big potential, I guess, and now I want to work with them in my project.

So, today I started to make researches on works and installations using photography for references and to get some ideas of what I could make for my own project. However, I can not make something just because I find it visually beautiful. It has to match my project aim and purpose.

I believe that there are many people who does not see the real problem social inequality is simply because it does not affect them, personally. This issue seems to be invisible and veiled by our society; but I want to expose it. And, as I said before, I want the people to reflect, open their minds and search for the problem. I want my work to be carefully examined. Consequently, thinking about this and after analyzing many art pieces, I decided that making a photography mosaic will convey completely my ideas and values into an impactful outcome. I am thinking of the big and main image to be something luxurious, but looking over, attentively, you will see that the image is composed by small pictures; the ones I took from the favelas.
