Vitamin supplements are important for some people, but it definitely depends on many outside factors. For example, I have to take a couple vitamin supplements because of my dietary choices (some are necessary, however). I don't eat much and when I do, I can't eat dairy products, and I refuse to eat meat. Because of this, as well as the lack of the kind of money needed to support that kind of diet, supplements are important for me. While nutrients should be taken from food primarily, it depends on each personal situation.

I believe vitamins and minerals are only under circumstances demand your body to require more than what you typically get from your normal diet. For example, when a woman is pregnant, their normal diet will not provide enough Folic acid that is recommended for prenatal development. Also, if there is a person who is implementing a rigorous exercise/strength training program, they may require more protein stores than what they usually get from their food diet. I feel the some people get caught up in the aesthetics and the advertising of vitamins and minerals who either don't actually need the extra nutrients, or simply do not choose the correct foods to receive those nutrients from their everyday diet.

If you are able to change your diet to increase your levels of separate vitamins, then I would try that first before taking supplements. Many people do just fine with their regular diet as long as it has the necessary vitamins/minerals. If they don't, then yes, it would be necessary for someone to use the supplements. If someone were, for example, lacking iron, they could bruise more easily, become more tired, and even get sick. In that case, they should either change their diet, or see a doctor if they should be prescribed to vitamins.

If you have some sort of food allergy and don't get all the nutrients you need from just the food you eat, then supplements will surly help you get them.
