The narrator is explaining how her grandmother; Tita, would cry all the time when she was younger. They say that that laughter was a form of crying for her. This shows how she always cries, even when nothing was being done to her. This especially would occur when people would cut onions. Since she would cry so often, the people in the house would get used to it. Since she “liked” to cry, the narrator explained how she also liked food and everything about it.

This is what Mama Elena is telling Tita. She told her that it doesn’t matter if she doesn’t agree with the tradition, she has nothing to say that can change it. Before this quote, the story states that Tita knew that no one disagreed with Mama Elena but she still tried to either way. Tita wanted to argue about how the tradition of the youngest daughter not getting married because they have to care for the mother. Tita wants to marry her lover Pedro but the tradition doesn’t allow her to.

The night that Pedro came to ask for Tita’s hand, her mother refused and instead decided to give Rosaura’s hand to Pedro. Rosaura is Tita’s older sister. The reason why her mom didn’t want to allow Tita to marry Pedro was because she was the youngest and the tradition was that the youngest doesn’t marry but instead takes care of her mother until she passed. When Tita found out that Pedro was going to get married to her sister, she felt “her body fill with a wintry chill.” I believe that that cold feeling is her describing what it feels like to be sad. Since she always cried, I believe that expressing feelings wasn’t an easy thing to do. That is why I believe that this quote is explaining what she was feeling. She also explains how this feeling didn’t leave her.
