Title: Father of Modern Social Psychology
Kurt Lewin was a German-born social psychologist. His theories emphasized the needs, personalities, and motivating forces of individuals. During his early years, as a college student, Lewin became involved in the socialist movement. He also advocated for women´s rights. He was interested in understanding and assessing situations as a whole rather than the individual aspects. In 1944, Lewin, along with other psychologists, founded the Center for Group Dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Lewin is best known for his work with group dynamics and action-based research.

Criticism of Lewin´s Theory

Some have viewed Lewinś model as being overly simple and too easy. Some have even called its simplicity ¨child´s play¨. Critics argue that the theory is too simple to explain the power of change. Others claim that the model does not discuss the role of the leader. In addition, the model is based on traditional US values and beliefs that places an emphasis on the individual within the organization.
Despite criticism, according to Kaplan and Owings, within the last few decades there has been a renewed interest in Lewin´s approach. Although other theories have been developed, Kurt Lewin´s model has inspired or provided the foundation for other developments.

Implementing Lewin´s Theory

According to Teachnology, an online teaching resource, the K-12 public education in the US is going through major changes. The reasons: student dropout, low grades, and increase stress level of students. Not to mention, the US continues to trail other foreign countries when it comes to education. The theory of unfreeze, change, and refreeze serves as the framework of many shifts in education. We know that we must get teachers out of their comfort zone in order to keep up with change. During that change we must provide support, educate, participate, and be willing to listen to questions and criticism eventually leading to our teachers and leaders to buy into the process. Without this, we become stuck or we revert back, not allowing ourselves to embrace change. Ultimately, if the refrozen process does not take place, we fail our students and the system of education.
