I think a lot can be said between the oppression of Black culture and Native American culture throughout history. Just like Blacks were oppressed and mistreated early on in American history (and arguably still to this day), Native Americans were no different. Just to name a few examples, both cultures experienced forceful relocation and assimilation practices to try and remove any and all of their past cultural/traditional practices.

I think it is important to learn and understand the harsh realities of our historical past with Native Americans. Like what was mentioned in the video, it won't change the past and what has been already written, but it might bring closure to those who have been directly and indirectly impacted by the systemic removal of their culture throughout history. It is my belief that as a current nation, we need to be doing as much as we can to ensure the protection and survival of Native American history and acknowledge that how we came to be here today on the land that we live on, was not just given up freely and justly.

Thru unfair deprivation and coerced Treaties, the Indigenous people had their lands taken from them. From the 1600's up until mid 20th century, land has been continuously stripped out of the hands of the Natives unjustly. Thanks to the continuous passion of individuals who back organizations like the Landback Movement, things are finally in motion to restore the land back into the rightful previous oweners. However, unfortunately, it is coming at a cost.

Another interesting function the Landback movement is achieving is the aid to climate crisis. In northern California, a Yurok Tribe is actually being tasked with and compensated for the removal of carbon dioxide pollutants from the breathable air. The money is being used to pay back the loan used to buy their land back, but it is also being used to buy even more of their ancestral lands back as well.

I think it is important to learn and understand from the Indigenous people when it comes to how to help mother earth. They have a lot of knowledge and traditional tools to battle climate change and I think there is lots to learn from them. The argument could be made that by them simply buying back their land to help battle climate crisis is counter-intuitive (since the corporations they are buying some of this land from are the ones causing the climate crisis), but I feel like we should put aside the politics and simply listen to the original people of the lands and how we can help start to heal and preserve our environment.

Native Knowledge 360 is a fantastic program based around educating the public about Native American past and traditions. By doing this, it gives thanks to the Natives and shows you acknowledge the past history that isn't necessarily taught or told how it should be. Thanksgiving being one of those misunderstood and often mislead popular American Holiday.

Common misconceptions about Thanksgiving

When it comes to Thanksgiving, it is often misrepresented, especially in the student classroom. Instead of doing crafts and dressing up as things related to the common "Thanksgiving" holiday theme, it would be more beneficial to share and spread knowledge about what Thanksgiving was really about. The Natives were always well known for sharing traditions and resources with other tribes long before early European settlers arrived. But when it comes to the thought of them sharing their food, resources and land with them, a more accurate representation would be to educate the students on the many conflicts and bloodeshed brought on by European settlers.

As we wrap up this particular section of the Semester, I reflect back to earlier discussions brought on about the struggles of black slaves in America. Like the history discussed about slavery in America, a lot can be tied together with the Indigenous people. From assimilation, to oppression, to injustices. Both cultures can be lumped into the same category as far as being treated unfairly by past historical white culture. Thankfully thru the talented and passionate voices of the newer generations of individuals from all walks of life, we can begin to approach, acknowledge and educate others and stand up for the what is right.
