Amelia Earhart was born July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. She had a sister named Muriel. Growing up, she lived with her grandparents. As a child, Amelia spent her summer months with her parents and her winter months with her grandparents. This curious little girl designed a roller coaster at age seven with her uncle. They used fencing, rails, and an old pair of roller skates. She wasn't afraid to act like a boy one bit. In fact, Amelia loved climbing bright green trees and hunting animals. Amelia once built a trap so she could catch stray chickens. Young ladies at the time were suppose to be gentle and graceful, but Amelia craved adventure. Amelia saw her first plane ever when she was just seven and was instantly mesmerized.

Did you know Amelia Earhart was a famous female pilot? She paid for her own flying lessons and couldn't wait to earn her pilot´s license. At last, this motivated woman earned her pilot´s license in 1921, and she was ready to take off. This amazing navigator bought her own airplane. It was bright yellow. She nicknamed it Canary. Soon after, this impressive girl set a record as the first female to fly 14,000 feet high into the sky. In 1928, Amelia flew with Bill Stultz and Slim Gordan on the" Friendship" airplane. Earhart was the navigator. She did an awesome job controlling the aircraft turning it left and right. It took her 21 hours to fly across the Atlantic Ocean which was an incredible accomplishment. Amelia was the first women to cross the Atlantic Ocean. She continued to pursue her dream of flying when she flew across the Pacific Ocean for the first time. On July 2nd, 1937 her plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and this brave women was believed to be dead. The U.S. government concluded that Amelia crashed somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. January 5, 1939 was the official date she was declared dead. Ric Gillespie, who was a director of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, believes Amelia Earhart spent her last days as a castaway on a desolate Pacific island.
