We believe that the final scene was not completely necessary and could have left the audience to interpret it rather then having it spoon-fed to them. However, it was important that the audience understand Norman's state of mind and the events in his past that caused it.

Rahzel - I believe the final scene was necessary because it explains why Norman was dressed like his mother and the reason why he murdered many people. This helps the audience comprehend why these certain aspects happened. 
The audience was supposed to assume from the fact that his mother was dead and he was dressed like her.

Matilda-  I don't think it was necessary. I think it would have been okay at least in this day in age if we only got the scene with Norman in the cell and the psychologist scene was cut. It would make us think and leave the audience intrigued with questions unanswered .

farah - personally i found the scene with the psychiatrist kind of boring. it felt like the psychiatrist was just repeating and saying the words I was already thinking. i think that the final scene was necessary as it helped to clear the air and explain what happened and what was going on in bates mind as the film came out in a time where people weren't aware of things regarding phycology . it helped to explain the reasoning behind why he was the way he was and why he was dressed like his mother to the audience.

I think it was because the end was really unexpected and I wouldn't have guessed that Norman was playing both parts of being himself and his mother.

they would've just had to guess because there wasn't a lot of evidence of him turning out to be the mother as well besides the sheriff saying that his mother was dead. there could have been another woman in the house or either in the grave.

As this scene may not have been the best it probably was for the better as it helps the audience understand what has happened and what is going on with norman, as the whole him dressing up as a women might of been confusing

1. Was the final scene necessary?
We all think that the final scene was in fact necessary, especially considering the time that this film was released. The scene also helps to build expectations and give a false sense of security which is quickly shattered in the next scene. We also agree with the point brought up in the video, to explain that he wasn't in fact transvestite.

2. How was the audience supposed to know all about Norman's past without this scene.
The audience wouldn't know. They'd just have to guess, but the final scene serves to confirm or deny the audience's guesses.
