Amy Young

What if our administrators did not expect lesson plans? Would we still do them? Yes, probably, but without as much detail, right? If I do not know what is expected of me, I may not perform at the level I could if examples, rubrics, or a set of expectations were provided to me. I feel that this is true for most students as well. Setting goals lets everyone (teachers, administrators, and most importantly, students) know what is expected, when to expect it, and how to get there. In addition, if goals are not met, the criteria can be modified based on evidence.

Goal setting is pivotal in making sure our instruction "gets" somewhere. Without a specific point to work towards or a set expected end result, we might venture off-course and our instruction might be confusing and therefore unproductive for our students. I have often heard it said that you can be good at many things but great at only a few. I want to be great. So I set one specific goal in most of my tasks (lessons, my week, my year). If I accomplish that one specific goal, I have grown closer to being great at something instead of being bogged down by a million things I could just be "ok" at. I encourage my students to take this same approach. Goal setting keeps us focused and allows teachers and students to observe their success is measurable quantities.

Lesley Moore
Students in my math classroom set a long term goal at the beginning of the year as they conference with me about previous math scores, skills, and even general learning elements. We reflect on those goals as we jump into the shorter term goals for the week or unit. What I have seen with even those struggling students, is when there is a goal, even a few points on a skill or solving x amount of problems, those students for the most part, strive to achieve the goal. Interestingly enough, when we get new students after the first semester, we set goals for the remainder of the year and I have found that those students who did not have goals set early in the year, are not as vested and don't see the value as much as those kiddos we had for an entire year.
With my own professional goals, it is important to keep in mind and evaluate all the pieces of the puzzle each year. You cannot just copy and paste the same goals time after time. Each year is different and so are our goals!

Not only is it how we structure our days, weeks, months i.e. lesson plans/scope and sequence but it's also a way we can model goal setting for our students. As an elementary educator part of my job is to help my students understand organization and using their time wisely. While this isn't always the most exciting thing for all students, when I'm able to help some of my students who struggle with this by discussing their daily goals one on one and seeing them get excited when they start reaching those goals it's the best reward for them and myself!
