How do we decide what is relevant to teach in our classrooms?

Between reading articles and attending the AK STEAM conference in Juneau, it has become clear to me that being familiar with a content area as an educator can only take one so far. The content is inextricably tied to context, and connecting between the students, the knowledge and the application of the knowledge to be learned is the only way that information can be transformed into meaning.

As educators it is our responsibility and privilege to make choices as to the material with which students are surrounded for a large part of their lives. How it becomes a part of theirs, and why they should care are factors that we must face daily.

Here's a 2019 article I found about writing authentic math problems. They outline four principles to follow: 1. The problem has a real purpose, 2. The content and challenge should be relevant to students, 3. The mathematics of the problem offer a genuine advantage, and 4. The problem fosters discussion even after it's solved.
