R2: When it is possible for PL to go beyond being content-based to also being situated within the materials that teachers are using this is very helpful for teachers. These two reports are ones that can be used to encourage this move in PL. 1) The Elements" Transforming Teaching through Curriculum-Based PL, Learning Forward and 2) Practice What You Teach, Aspen Institute

Within a lot of our work recently, we have tried to invite engagement by offering "questions for consideration". So, as I think about this resource, I am envisioning questions we could offer schools/districts that invite them to think about these recommendations. For the first group, I'm thinking about that "tracking of teachers" and thinking about a question for consideration like "How does your school/district determine which courses teachers are assigned to? Is there anything you want to shift about your approach? What might be some ideas you might consider if your school/district shifts your approach (perhaps more targeted questions related to ideas for things they maybe SHOULD be thinking about)?"

Replying to Questions for Consideration: One high school that I had a connection to in the past established that each teacher have a teaching assignment that included one 9/10 class and one 11/12 class. It also established that the grade 9 class be taught by experienced and skillful teachers, so that it became a sought after course for teachers to teach. These two policies went a long way toward minimizing teacher tracking.
