Information Advice and Guidance is central to our service. We are committed to helping all learners to address and overcome any barriers to learning, and support them in making realistic and well informed choices.

Our experienced and qualified IAG officers will help learners to explore their options and progress onto their own inspirational pathway for access to learning and employment opportunities.

We will support you to address barriers that prevent progression through focussed early intervention, this could involve one to one or group work.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses are for those whose first language is not English. Learners develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the English language, and also their knowledge of language.
We offer a range of courses at varying levels from beginners through to advanced.

Who are these courses for?

Functional Skills English and Maths are qualifications designed to help both young people and adults develop their English and Maths skills in order to apply them in employment and everyday life. The highest level of Functional Skills English and Maths is Level 2 which is equivalent to a GCSE grade C/ 4.

In order to gain a Functional Skills English qualification, you are required to complete and pass a reading exam, a writing exam and a speaking and listening assessment.

For a Functional Skills Maths qualification, you are required to sit and pass an exam, composed of a non-calculator and calculator section.

Once you have passed the exams, you will receive a certificate from the awarding body as proof of the new skills you have learnt!

LEARNING OUTCOMES ENGLISH

Listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts
Apply your understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit the audience and purpose
Read a range of different text types confidently, applying your knowledge and understanding of texts to your own writing
Write texts which vary in complexity, with accuracy and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
Understand the situations for when planning, drafting and using formal language is important and when it is less important

LEARNING OUTCOMES MATHS

Read, understand and use mathematical information and terms
Identify suitable operations and calculations to generate answers
Check the sense and reasonableness of answers
Present and explain results clearly and accurately with reasoning to support answers

LEGAL ENTITLEMENT
The entitlements allow learners aged:
*19 to 23 to be fully-funded if they study for a first qualification at level 2 and/or level 3

*19 and over, who have not previously attained a GCSE grade C/grade 4 or higher, to be fully-funded if they study for a qualification in English, Maths or Digital Skills, up to and including level 2

Functional Skills are available at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 for Maths and English.

As an approximate comparison, Entry Level 1 – 3 is below GCSE level, Level 1 is comparable to GCSE grades 1 – 3, and Level 2 is comparable to GCSE grade 4.

What is FACES?

Family, Adult and Community Education Service is part of Sheffield Council. We deliver adult learning courses in community settings across the city for adults aged 19 years and over.

Our courses run throughout the year, term time only. You can enrol in September, January or April.

Learning new skills with us will empower you to achieve your career goals and create new opportunities that might not have been available before.

Returning to education also demonstrates to employers that you are willing to work and can easily adapt to new environments.

At FACES we provide a learning environment that focusses on you, the learner. Our classes are small, which means we can give each learner the individual support they need to progress in their learning journey.

Our tutors are qualified and have specialised knowledge, skills and experience of teaching adult learners.

We also understand the barriers some adult learners may face because they have had a poor prior experience of education or simply didn't have the opportunity to learn.
We will do our best to support you back into learning and help you to develop learner skill sets, employability skills, self-esteem, life skills and encourage you to develop social networks in a flexible learning environment.

What is an Advanced Learner Loan?

The government has introduced loans for all students aged 19 and above in further education and training studying accredited courses recognised by the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) at level 3 and above.

FACES do not currently offer any Level 3 courses.

How do I know if I am eligible for a loan?

You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course.

Your course must be:

• a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification, e.g. A Levels or graduate certificate

• at an approved college or training provider in England.

Ask your college or training provider if you don’t know if your course is eligible.

Please note: Getting a loan doesn’t depend on your household income and there’s no credit check.

How much will I receive?

The amount you’ll get depends on the type of course you take and how much the tuition fees are. The minimum loan you can get is £300. You don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course. You can pay for some of it yourself.

How will the loan be paid?

The money will be paid directly to your college or training organisation, once they’ve confirmed you’ve attended the course for 2 weeks.

When will I have to repay the loan?

You’ll have to start repaying your loan when your income is over a certain amount (the ‘threshold’ amount).

You’ll be charged interest from the day you get the first payment.

You can choose to make extra repayments towards your loan. These are in addition to the repayments you must make when your income is over the threshold amount and are not compulsory.

Family, Adult & Community Education Service - (FACES) fees for courses delivered by FACES must comply with the SYMCA guidance linked to the Adult Education Budget (AEB) which forms the grant funding that Family and Community Learning (FACES) receives. Learners’ eligibility and funding is defined in the Funding Rules which can be found on the following websites:

Where learners may not be fully funded, LLSC as a provider has the discretion to offer to waive the fee. Full details of possible reasons for fee waiver are listed on enrolment forms.

If no fee waiver is suitable then learners will be expected to pay the required fees. This is to be collected at the beginning of the course – where necessary fees can be collected over an agreed length of time.
