The United States began to get involved in the Spanish-American war because they wanted to help Cuba gain independence from Spain. People from the United states took the USS Maine ship over to Cuba and it unfortunately exploded killing or hurting everyone on the ship. Yellow Journalism then convinced the majority of Americans that it was Spain who caused the explosion. This led to war with the Spanish and led to the United States winning the war and then gaining Cuba, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

America had a large role in creating the canal. This is due to the fact that they are the reason that Panama became a country after they took it from Colombia. After helping Panama to gain independence they then took their land in order to have access to the canal. This canal helped the whole world because it connected the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. I think it is very good that the US gained control of the canal but I also believe that they could have handled it better than they did.

When the war first started America wanted to remain peaceful and neutral. They made lots of economic growth due to the fact that they could trade freely with both sides. Although, they began to get pulled into the war when Germany began using unrestricted sub warfare and sinking ships without any warning, killing/wounding many Americans. The Germans continued to do this after promising and pledging more than once that they would stop. Another reason America was pulled into the war is due to the Zimmerman note, this was a note from Germany to Mexico establishing secret allies if America were to join the war. Lastly, another thing that helped to influence America to join the war is the Russian Revolution because America did not want to fight with a dictatorship and when they left during the war it made America more likely to ally with Britain. Finally when Germany pulled the last straw and sunk three more American ships President Wilson decided it was time to declare war.

America aquired the Philippines in the Treaty of Paris. The Philippines had believed that America was trying to help liberate them from Spain and help them gain their independence, instead America decided to colonize them instead. This caused their country to get mad because they wanted their own freedom so they started the war. America fought back and the Philippines used their grounds as an advantage against us. After many soldiers and civilians died America won the war and continued to have the Philippines colonized until after WWII.

In 1914, trenches were quickly dug out parallel to each other. They would offer protection for the troops. As the war went on the trench systems became more complex making things much more convenient for the soldiers. Many soldiers were getting diseases like trench foot, trench fever, and shell shock. In the trenches they would often use rifles until machine guns were found to be much more affective.

The Paris Peace Conference was the meeting to develop a peace treaty at the end of the war. The "Big 3" countries that were included were Britain, France, and America. The US helped to come up with the idea of making the League of Nations which was discussed in President Wilson's Fourteen Points speech, this countries that joined would work together to stay at peace and if one country went to war the other countries would be there to help. France and Britain on the other hand wanted revenge on Germany, they wanted to eliminate their military, take their money, and take their colonies. By the end of the conference they created the Treaty of Versailles, this treaty was designed to cripple Germany militarily, territorially, and economically. The League of Nations also was becoming a thiing but even though it was President Woodrow Wilson's idea, America did not join due to the fact that they did not want to get pulled into more wars than necessary. America ended up signing our own sepereate peace treaties because we did not want to join the league of nations.
