Hinton uses history in her book by using greaser sub-culture to show that there is tension between social groups 
The Socs have tension because they feel trapped in the socially privileged box. So they react by jumping greasers  
The greasers have tension because they feel inferior to the Socs and they retaliate with violence (IE: robbing a gas station, having a rumble) 
Overall, S.E. Hinton uses history to show how no one likes to be put in a box.
