Also, there will be times when their emotions shown might not be the accurate depiction of what they are actually feeling. When I hear about the term behavioural disorder, I would think that the person faces difficulty in managing his/her behaviour. It can be behaviours like being violent but it is something that they are not able to have control over.

Emotional disorder sounds like when a person has challenges controlling what they feel and may not know how to manage the emotions. I'm guessing it may be related to negative emotions too. For behavioral disorder, perhaps it refers to someone who is unable to hold back behaving a certain way, usually with a negative connotation. One last wild guess is that this has to do with mental health.

When I was younger, my counsellor suggested to my parents that I had an emotional behavioural disorder. She said that I didn't enjoy classes, seldom expressed happiness or satisfaction and didn't make friends. Things gradually changed when my family supported me extensively, and it is only looking back that I remember going through something like that. Now I think I was just a very morose 6 year old with bouts of ADHD. I used to go from episodes of daydreaming to jumping around class with a broom. This was quite unusual in girls but my counsellors at that time were determined not to label me.

These days, when I hear the terms 'emotional disorder' and 'behavioural disorder', I am instantly brought back to my international practicum days. During my practicum in New Zealand, I encountered a student who had sudden episodes of aggressive screaming, emotional outbursts and display of violence. My coordinating teacher later told me that the student had once attempted to strangle another student after losing control over her emotions. She further explained to me that the child had a disorder called the Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), and that it had something to do with the child's family background and the environment she grew up in. During my lesson observations in that class, I observed that the child displayed significant difficulties in communicating with her peers, and her frequent outbursts were also seen as disruptive behaviour in the classroom.

And it was during the time I spent there that I realised that emotional and behavioural disorders are not always separated by a clearly-defined boundary -- often times, one's ability to control, read or express his/her emotions influences the way he/she behaves in a social setting. In the aforementioned case above, the child had trouble controlling both her emotions and disorders.

Even disorders like social anxiety disorders or the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) encompasses aspects of an individual's emotions and feelings, which in turn compel them to act in a certain manner. Hence, while certain conditions lean more towards one particular category, it is important that we do not view them merely in silos.

To me, emotional disorder and behavioral disorder refers to conditions where an individual is unable to control their emotions due tio biological reasons, perhaps due to neurological issues or due to the biochemistry in the body. This is manifested in their actions - through actions that are seen as not normal to typically developing individuals. At the same time, I feel that this condition can be managed with the use of psychiatric ( that are diagnosed by professionals and with proper strategies, individuals having such conditions are better able to cope with their symptoms and live their daily lives without much difficulty)

Perhaps Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Bipolar Disorder and even depression. All the mentioned conditions have a emotional aspect to them - either the lack of a certain emotion or an excessive expression of another. I probably would think of OCD and maybe even Dissociative Identity disorder as behavioural disorders where a person behaves in an atypical manner or manner that does not conform to rules set by society

When I hear the term emotional disorder, I would first think about a child who exhibits internalizing behaviors, which includes depressive and anxiety symptoms. I think that because children with emotional disorders would have difficulty in regulating their emotions, they may appear withdrawn or experience many mood changes. I think that they may also exhibit some externalizing behaviors such as increased exuberance and poor response to disappointments through aggression.

When I hear the term behavioral disorder, I would first think about a child who exhibits externalizing behaviors. This would include symptoms of ADHD, ODD and conduct problems, such as impulsivity and deviant behaviors directed toward the physical environment (e.g. aggression).
