Water desalination process separates dissolved salts and other minerals from the water. The cost for this process is quite high for the society for its water output. costing around billion dollars in a few desalination plants in the USA. There are a few drawbacks of this where the pipes draw in the water from the oceans and there might be a chance of other organisms getting caught during the process.
Qatar is one such country that barely receives less than 74 millimeters of rain a year. Through desalination, Qatar is able to produce 3.5 million cubic meters of water. This water will go to farmers that will be able to supply the country with food. The water is quality is more safe to drink now.
http://12.000.scripts.mit.edu/mission2017/dams-and-reservoirs/
