- “ Any movement, means movement for all of us”- Dorothy. This shows through resilience she is trying to make a change in the black working community / trying to gain more respect”
- Near the end of the movie when Mary and a co worker are conversating and the camera angle is level meaning they are looked upon as equals symbolising some sort of change.
- The low camera angle , with a slight more focus on Katherine when working out the mathematical equations none of the white men could do themselves shows a sense of power and superiority towards Katherine which also gives us a sense of positive change, more respect towards the black women in the working community and the idea of moving forward.
“Every time we get ahead they move the finish line”- said by Mary shows that even though the people of the NASA workplace are trying to make it difficult for them to rise in the promotion ladder, they are still continuing to thrive and do their work to the best of their ability disregarding their set backs.

On any given day, I analyze the manometer levels for air displacement, friction, and velocity, and compute over ten thousand calculations by cosine, square root, and lately, Analytic Geometry, by hand. There are twenty bright, highly capable Negro women in the West Computing Group, and we’re proud to be doing our part for the country. So, yes, they let women do some things at NASA, Mr. Johnson, and it’s not because we wear skirts. It’s because we wear glasses. Have a good day.”

Jaren
IF Race and Gender of people’s work environments and tasks, people would have a massive problem. Great minds can be in those of different colours or genders and humans would not be able to advance if we blocked out these ideas of people strictly because of the way they look.
Why
Because every human has a right to achieve their dreams of whatever it is to be, maybe even changing the world. If a negro woman were too find the Cure Of Cancer, would we consider it useless or ignore it due to her colour. The obvious answer is no and this is why If people become accepting to everyone we would get more done as a whole.

In The Movie Hidden Figures one of the scenes used to give an example of this is when the boss asked Katherine why she had been gone for so long and she replied talking about the coloured woman’s bathroom. This is relates back too our topic because it holds her back from achieving the goal and doing her work. Where if that wasn’t a problem she would be getting things done quicker and more efficiently.
After they change this, it proves to be that Katherine helps them achieve something that no one else had done before.
Because of this the director shows that race and sexuality should not hold you back from doing things you wish to do and that people would be able to achieve extraordinary things of this wasn’t a problem.

This brings to the police surprised “I had no idea they hired-(women)” NASA in a way breaks he gender and racial barrier by hiring coloured women like Mary, Katherine and Dorothy. Women worked as computers to assist in the space race.
- Mr Zielinski recognises Mary’s talent and wants her to te impossible (become and engineer) being a coloured woman. “I’m a negro woman, I’m not gonna entertain the impossible” Mr Zielinski insists on her statement. He wants her to further help NASA to achieve something greater and doesn’t want gender and race equality holding her back.
- “No more coloured restrooms, no more white restrooms just plain ol’ toilets... here at NASA we pee they same colour.” Al Harrison didn’t want race inequality to obstruct people especially Mary from working effectively to achieve a great goal and so he removed the segregation toilet rule in NASA.
- The men in NASA had trouble starting the IBM until Dorothy came and fixed it by herself. Amazed, the men the offered her to help program it. “The lead engineers says your good with the cards, programming and such.” They recognised Dorothy’s capability with programming and wanted her to use her knowledge for the IBM.

This is shown through a low camera angle with a slight focus on Katherine to highlight her superiority in solving the equations that the other white men were unable to.
- Al Harrison tells Paul Stafford “its your job to find a genius” as the camera shifts to Katherine, recognising her for intelligence despite being a different race and gender
- Mary was an example that an African-American woman could achieve an engineers degree through great persistence

Instead of giving up she goes to court to be able to take these classes. In the court room, she moves from the judge looking down on her to her being on the same level as him.
- Katherine wants to attend the briefings with the new coordinates that gets changed so frequently so she doesn’t have to keep restarting. She persists multiple times to get in the briefings. Eventually she persuaded Al to let her in he says “your not going to let this go are you?” Paul moves out of frame and Al leads her in
- Katherine does all the math in the reports for Paul but isn’t allowed to put her name on it with his. “A computer doesn’t write reports” Paul says. However by the end Paul allows Katherine to put her name on the report and even gives her a coffee. The camera angle is neutral showing that they are equal.

-After having got restart her work time and time again, Katherine tells Paul that if she “could attend briefings I could stay current...” but Paul interrupts her saying “Katherine, we have been through this, it is not possible. There is no protocol for women attending.” After Al allows her to attend, he asks her to solve the go-no go zone for the capsule which she seems to do with ease. John Glenn then say, “I like her numbers.” Katherine is able to solve something that none of the other men in the briefing are able to do, even though she was not allowed to attend at first just because she was a woman. If her gender didn’t stop her from attending briefings earlier, NASA could have launched John Glenn into space much earlier.
-When trying to figure out the mathematical formula for converting an elliptical orbit into a parabolic orbit, Katherine is the first to realise that you aah ve to use Euler’s method. Paul questions her by saying, “that’s ancient,” but Katherine is able to use the method to figure out the conversion before any of her white, male colleagues, showing people of any colour or gender can figure out extraordinary things.
-Al asks Katherine where she goes for 40 minutes a day which she replies to in anger about how “there are no coloured bathrooms in this building or any building outside the West Campus which is half a mile away.” This means that Katherine has to put her work on hold everyday because of her race and that if she was white she’d be able to get more done. In the next scene, Al is seen to be knocking down the ‘Coloured Ladies Room’ sign symbolising the abolish of segregation at NASA and says that “Here at NASA, we all pee the same colour.” He does this to stop Katherine from having to run half a mile to go to the bathroom just because of her colour and by doing this is allowing her a greater chance to achieve something extraordinary.

Throughout the movie it’s indirectly reinforcing the facts that Katherine is the only black person and woman in her office, surrounded by 20+ white men doing the same job. However Katherine is always called upon to check numbers and made by others, and is increasingly relied on and trusted by astronaut John Glenn to confirm calculations. Just before launch, John insists that Katherine checks them and seems uneasy about the idea of launching without it.

JOHN GLENN
Let’s get the girl to check the numbers.

AL HARRISON
The girl?

JOHN GLENN
Yes, sir. The smart one. If she says
they’re good, I’m ready to go.

HARRISON
Sam...go find Katherine. She needs to
verify Glenn’s Go/No Go or we’re staying on the ground.

In the beginning of the movie, Katherine, Mary and Dorothy are stranded by their broken down car on a long empty stretch of road on their way to work. A white police officer puts his sirens on, pulls up behind them and exits his car approaching the women. He starts the conversation with an obvious sense of superiority but after asking for identification and learning that the three women work for NASA he becomes much more humble and humane towards the women. Afterwards he offers a police escort to their work which they accept.

It’s evident that to begin with, the officer made prejudicial assumptions about the women and what they were potentially doing out here. However once he is informed that the women are of great importance not only to NASA but to the entire country, he becomes much more appreciative and friendly.

To achieve something extraordinary we can’t allow race and gender to get in the way (jony)

The idea of this is constantly shown throughout the movie as both gender and race have a common goal. Coloured and white is clearly evident at the beginning of the movie however as the goal becomes much harder to achieve, coloured and white becomes unclear due to more cooperation. Katherine Johnson and Al Harrison are prime characters who show this idea as they are interdependent on each other, Katherine needs the job and Al needs the calculations. Specifically in the movie, the scene of Katherine's breakdown is the big change in the movie. It captures the large room filled with white men, with a wide high shot. Katherine in a different coloured uniform stands out however this difference becomes evident in her being confronted by Al Harrison. The composition of the shot is a close up and she is placed on the left half of the screen. Katherine is enraged due to things such as a simple pleasure of going to the restroom, income inequality and segregation only due to her colour. “There are no coloured bathrooms in this building, or any building outside the west campus, which is half a mile away”. The uniform dress code is a factor in her built up anger as it shows the income difference between coloured and whites. “Lord knows, you don’t pay coloured enough to afford pearls”. Both the coloured bathrooms and coffee pot show the idea segregation. “Living of coffee from a pot, none of you want to touch”. However this idea is later dismantled as Harrison removes both the sign for coloured bathrooms and sticker on the coloured pot of coffee. “No more coloured restrooms (camera cuts to show Harrison targeting his anger to the whites), no more white restrooms, just plain old toilets”. Harrison is breaking down the barriers placed by society by those in power. It’s a very big and symbolic moment for coloured people as a white man is sticking up for their rights and removing segregation in a work place. “Here at nasa we all appear the same colour” Harrison after us confrontation with Katherine has opened his eyes to the harsh reality of coloured segregation and seeks to help remove that with his own hands and will power. He finally acknowledges the coloured folks as equal.

Persistence is a key factor to effectively move forward in society, whether you are personally moving forward or someone else is.
Dorothy - “any movement is movement for us all” Emphasises the idea that when working hard and showing persistence you are able to achieve many things, not just for yourself but for your race.
Kathrine - showing resilience every time she wrote her name on the report and Paul Stafford said she was not able to take credit for her work. Her persistence and resilience in not being knocked down or letting the colour of her skin define how well she works, allows her to move forward in both her personal life and work life.
Not only this, but the resilience kathrine shows everyday having to run the the bathroom to relieve herself and overcoming the embarrassment when Al Harrison asks where so goes everyday.
Mary - “every chance we get ahead they move the finish line” emphasises the resilience that the African American women show when trying to work their way up the ranks.

To achieve something extraordinary we can’t allow race and gender to get in the way (Cairo)

Race and gender is shown to be a constant issue in the film “Hidden Figures”, since the goal was to see what country could get the first man to orbit, but due to the race and gender of extraordinary women, the goal was not being achieved since those women could not work with everyone else. Coloured and whites were separated not just at NASA, but in the world revolving it. The coloured women working at NASA had a different bathroom, and were expected to dress like dolls, wearing colourful patterns on shirts, skirts, shorts and dresses. White men and women working at nasa wore more plain, professional looking colours. Men wore long white sleeve button shirts, long black pants and black shoes, and the white women wore tight fitting dresses that were usually either navy or black. At NASA, everyone was trying to reach the same goal, but the boundaries set out on coloured people prevented this from happening for years. By limiting the people working on a project based just off their race or gender, we limit ourselves to achieving something extraordinary. Al Harrison, the boss at NASA, realised this and decided to take action after Katherine shouted at him in front of the NASA workforce when questioned why she is gone for 40minutes a day, which she explained was due to there being no coloured bathrooms in the facility. After she stormed out, the next day Al Harrison went to the coloured women’s bathroom and slammed the “Coloured Women’s Room” down to the ground. The coloured women stood to his right, and the white people stood to his left in groups, eyeing him in silence.

Quote:

“At NASA, we all pee the same Colour.” Was then said by Harrison, which started to make the US skyrocket and achieve the end goal faster than the Soviet Union.
