But when the incident occurred with Maureen and her mom she was sentence to an upstate hospital. After that when she got out of the hospital she didn't want to see any of her family members and headed to California Jeannette was telling herself that she didn't take care of her when she promise her that day. This quote is related to the Theme because in the story her mom would buy stuff that is useless to them but still buy it and doesn't buy them clothes and food. And this would always cause problems in the family because they would've spend it very quickly and before the month would be over they didn't have money.So with these situation that's  why Jeannette and Lori decided to do this.
