"Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face" (O'Flaherty 5).

The sniper discovering that the man he killed is his brother is ironic because throughout the plot of the story, the sniper views the other man as his enemy through and through. He spends so much time and energy trying to overpower this adversary that the possibility of the other sniper being not only human, but a close relative of the protagonist, is shocking. It is the opposite of what is expected and demonstrates the horrors of war.

The Eyes of Death

"His face was the face of a student, thin and ascetic, but his eyes had the cold gleam of the fanatic...deep and thoughtful...used to looking at death." (O'Flaherty 1).

The sniper seems to be normal. He also has the look of someone who is very self-disciplined. However, his eyes have a completely different feeling associated with them. He has the eyes of someone with very extreme thoughts and opinions. They are also give insight as to what he has done. The quote says he has seen the eyes of death, which means he has killed multiple people. Later on in the story, it also talks about how he feels little to no remorse for what he has done. This description gives a very good mental image of what the sniper looks like. It is easy to picture him with deep, dark eyes. The characterization also has a very negative connotation , which makes the sniper seem like a hardened man. That is why it is surprising at the end of the story when the sniper kills his brother because a hardened man would most likely not care.

The sniper fired again" (O'Flaherty 2)

The snipers first encounter with these people is after seeing them, he immediately kills them . He doesn't give them any time to talk or look around before they were shot. Thus, proving he is extremely paranoid of everyone around him and is constantly trying to control what happens around him. His bullets would never pierce the steel that covered the gray monster" (O'Flaherty 2).

The sniper knew that the enemy car would prove to be a severe threat to his life, and that his specialty, shooting, would be no use against a large military turret. He was very experienced when it came to sniping at long range, but taking on a large vehicle, with very forceful machine guns would almost guarantee his fate. So, he waits to see what the driver would do, and when the informer approaches the turret, the sniper realizes that his opportunity to take on his opponent was now.

"His teeth chattered, he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody."(O'Flaherty 4)

This is the only time in the entire story, the sniper says anything aloud. Overwhelmed by the emotion, he forgets about the war going on around him, and risks everything. He has just shot the other sniper, and something changed in his mind. He has devoted so much into this war: he has fasted, he is sleep deprived, he has a bullet in his bone. Now he is questioning what it is all for. Whatever it is, is it worth it? At this point in the story, it blatantly depicts the conflicts in the story - man vs. self, man vs. man, and man vs. society.

Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet roof. The sniper took another whiff and put out the cigarette. Then he swore softly and crawled away to the left."(O'Flaherty 1)

The sniper lighting his cigarette is imagery because the way the author describes him lighting his cigarette shows how reckless and thoughtless the character can be. It describes the cigarette in so much detail that the reader can smell and hear exactly what's happening

"Morning must not find him wounded on the roof" (O'Flaherty)

The author uses the literary device of personification when he says that "morning must not find him". Personification is where you describe a non human thing with human characteristics. Morning is a time of day and not a living thing. Therefore, morning can not find because it is not human. The sniper is scared of what will happen if someone finds him the next morning wounded on the roof. The usage of this quote helps show that it is dangerous for the sniper to be found wounded in the morning because it would put him in a very vulnerable and dangerous place.
