Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 Parasite is far from the apolitical films that are usually identified with the post-modern age of cinema. Parasite features a social meta-commentary as the film criticizes how wealth negatively influences people, specifically exploring how the growing divide between the rich and poor forces the poor to do a series of heinous things, justifying each terrible act with trying to finically survive. Th film follows the Kim family after the son (Ki-Woo) was hired to tutor the daughter of a very wealthy family, gradually the entire family replaces the work force that supports the very wealthy family, with his sister replacing an art teacher, his father replacing the families driver, and his mother eventually becoming the houses maid. However it is eventually revealed that the old maid’s husband lives in a bunker under the rich family’s home, and the two groups turn on each other fighting for the scraps left by the rich family. The man living below the home in the end rushes up stairs and stabs Ki-Woo’s sister before he is killed and the Ki-Woo’s father kills the rich father.

Kim Family

In the film the Kim’s are supposed to be a literal representation of how finical marginalization can force people to do awful things for their financial survival. The Kim family living in a basement apartment is symbolic of how the children begin their lives at a disadvantage (or stuck in the proverbial basement). This is supposed to illustrate how poor people are often not offered the same opportunities as wealthy folks as a result of their finical standing. The Kim family altercation with the former maid and her husband is a metaphor for how poorer communities often devolve into violence between one another as they often have to fight for the scraps left to them by the wealthy.

Park Family

The wealthy family, the Park family is a meta-commentary on how wealthy families or people often use or abuse the less fortunate to help maintain their lifestyle. The park family looks to pay for other people to solve their own families problems such as the daughter’s struggles in school, and the artistic assistance her brother needs. This is a metaphor for how the wealthy often place the burdens of life’s difficult tasks on less fortunate people who will take care of said tasks for minimal compensation.
