I initiated the development of an assembly script, based on the rights of the child. The children came up with the questions to challenge attitudes of adults in the past. Learners were definitely responsible for creating the questions and considering what the answers would be (hot seating as characters from a book we read).
Sarah McK

As part of our assembly preparation, we learned about the global goals. As this was an area which the children did not know about, this needed to be teacher initiated. It was, however, then led by the learners who then created their own questions and their own pieces of drama based around the goals.
(Sara)

Number 6
We always start the John Muir Award with a consultation with the pupils in which we ask them what they want to learn, where they want to explore and what they want to take action on. However, there are also things that we have in mind to complete and that needs to be included so in that respect it is joint planning. However, the whole discussion and project is initiated by the teacher.
Linsey

I introduced global warming as part of our IDL based on the novel Holes by Louis Sacher. We discussed and predicted what may have happened at Camp Green Lake; what had caused the lake to dry up? The learner generated their own questions and ideas about this. This initiated a study into how much power/energy the school was using and what steps we could take to reduce this.
(Carrie)

I used earlier photo to initiate discussion - children drinking from a water supply. I asked what their thoughts were? What? Where? Why? How? We briefly discussed water in Scotland. After discussion I then asked why we need bottled water? The response and reaction was quite funny - some puzzled. Then I mentioned recycling. Earlier lesson children indicating on noticeboard items they recycle at home. After I asked 'I wonder how many we use in 1 day? 1 week?...in class/school/Dundee? It was suggested we begin to collect them. This has then linked to our Oceans -(plastic), Water (cleaner) /Weather (turbulent) and protecting our Natural World and species.

Learners did much of the discussion and generated next steps. I only felt I had to initiate the discussion then at times guide it.
Kirstie

Just on Friday I spoke with my class about where they would like their learning to go. There were two options - to look at other barriers across the world to children enjoying their human rights, or looking at charities that help. They opted for looking at more children/countries across the world that their basic needs aren't being met. They have suggested a couple of countries they would like to look at and suggested in ICT time they look these up and actually find our themselves, feeding their thoughts back to the class. Also using the books from the central library to research. I love their interest in this topic based learning. We hope to help a charity by doing something before the end of the session but even is we planned it this is helping them understand what charities and what they can do to help.
Jackie

While learning about the oceans in P3 I talked about the need to reduce our need to use so much plastic and much of it was ending up in the ocean and entering the food chain. I showed the children clips of some of the damage and pollution on our beaches. They then continued to research the problem on their own in small groups. This lead to quality discussions about the problem and what they could do to tackle it. They produced posters advising of the problem and small ways in which individuals could help.
Christine
